Windows 10 or 11?
« on: January 17, 2023, 03:14:11 am »

Hello Guys,

is there a difference using Windows 11 instead of Windows 10? Any advantage / disadvantages in the different OS? Right now I'm using Windows 10. Since Windows 10 will only be supported until 2025 i might switch to Windows 11. I also got the message from another Board asking about OS with an HTPC i got the answer that it is strongly recommended for MadVR to use Windows 10. Since i use at the moment the JRiver Scaler for Tonemapping and upscaling instead of MadVR i would like to hear from you what is your opinion regarding the OS (when using the JRiver scaler)?

Before even considering Windows 11, I'd check and make sure your PC hardware is officially compatible because most older hardware does not meet the security requirements (secure boot and TPM 2.0). Even then, there's still time before having to make a decision.  That, and Windows 12 is likely coming in 2024. Honestly? I'd just stick with Windows 10 and see what happens.

Running this tool can tell you whether or not your hardware is Windows 11 compatible: https://github.com/rcmaehl/WhyNotWin11

I have 1 * Win11 Workstation (AMD APU), 1 * Win 10 Server (only VGA graphics) and 1 * Win 10 Media Renderer(GTX 960) all having MC installed. For JRVR I  have experienced no difference behaviour between Win10, Win11.

I recently switched to win 11 and I must say that the whole system, but especially the MC30, has improved.
However, it should be considered that the htpc is configured only to work with JRiver so the programs and services are reduced to the essentials.

I have one annoyance that I can't fix: Microsoft Teams!

I have disabled the chat icon, uninstalled the app, cleared the registry and restarted but despite doing this several times, every now and then I get an annoying pop-up inviting me to reinstall the app. Luckily it doesn't appear while watching a movie, but it's a very annoying thing

You really shouldn't do this and I don't recommend anyone to tweak or run "debloat" scripts on Windows 10 or Windows 11, as it leaves the OS in a 'broken' state. I'm also pretty sure JRiver doesn't support running MC on tweaked/debloated Windows setups like this (or at least, they really shouldn't, in my opinion) as it can and will cause all kinds of unforeseen issues.

Ironic too, I literally just read this post on Reddit before reading this reply, and I couldn't agree more with this user's conclusion: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/10f3gjg/as_someone_whos_messed_with_debloatstweaking_in/

Could you describe what especially improved using win11? Is it possible to boot directly into JRiver without login in into windows first?

And I have to check first like awesome monkey recommend my system compatibility. Maybe windows will not run on my machine.

I didn't make any changes to Win11, I simply loaded the essential programs to run JRiver and to maintain the htpc. I also removed unnecessary apps such as Microsoft Teams and Edge.

With Win10 JRiver didn't always start at the first try and sometimes I had difficulty with the custom resolution (I have a 21:9 screen).

But now I start JRiver from the remote control, choose the film and everything runs smoothly. :)

That's also the official JRiver position.  Don't mess with the OS.  It's asking for trouble.
