Tagging WAV Files Larger Than 4GB
« on: February 17, 2023, 01:50:07 pm »

Hi Guys, is it possible to embed tags into WAV files larger than 4GB? MC does a good job of at least storing the information, so the tracks are labeled and grouped into the right album, but embedding the info is much better.

I have some WAV files that are 6-10GB. They have the WAV file extension, not W64.

Hi Chris.  It's not working well today.  Big WAV files have a -1 for the chunk length, but that makes chunks after not easily reachable.

Bob suggested using W64.

Is it possible to get W64 support in MC's Convert Format feature?

Also, I just tried to tag a W64 file in MC and it crated a sidecar file rather than embedded the tag.

If it helps, most lossless encoders support big files and tagging.  I added big file support to Monkey's Audio a while back.  I think WavPack works too.

Testing Monkey's and WavPack now.

I can't convert a 7.8GB WAV file to WavPack in MC on Windows. It gives me the error seen in the screenshot. I also don't see WavPack on the macOS version.

Next build:
Fixed: Encoding really big files was failing with WavPack.

It was overflowing and not using -1 for the wave header sizes.

We also made this change:
Changed: WAV files greater than 2 GB are no longer tagged.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Hi Matt, just installed the latest version and now MC is quitting on me when I try to convert a 7GB WAV to WavPack.

Build 67 has the WavPack fix.  If you're running that and it's not working maybe report in the build thread and we'll try to figure it out.  Thanks.
