Support DSD1024
« on: May 08, 2023, 04:52:34 am »

Hello, I would like to ask if DSD1024 support can be included in the future?
I know this question has already been asked, but the DSD1024 is slowly starting to be available, especially on NATIVE DSD
I have a DAC that supports DSD1024.
Thank you to all of you.

In the future you might try doing a search of the forums first before asking, as this is something that's been asked before, and it was shot down by Jim and Matt: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,132802.0.html

Obviously *if* support was added for it (which going by Jim's comments in the other topic, it's not likely happening), it'd have to be through native DSD. There's no way you could do DoP for DSD1024 with any currently available DAC since, as far as I know, there are no DACs that support a PCM sample rate of 1411.2 kHz right now which would be needed for DSD512 DoP support. DSD1024 via DoP would require a PCM sample rate of 2822.4 kHz which is mindboggling to think about.

Bottom line, likely not happening, and it seems pointless, IMO.

You could try to bitstream DSD (e.g. T+A DAC 200 supports native bitstream up to DSD 1024). Ususally this requires to use the vendors ASIO Driver and USB as Audio Interface.

I think MC would have to support it too, in order to bitstream it. If you look at the bitstreaming formats list and the DSD dropdown, you're able to choose what to bitstream DSD as up to DSD512. I'm assuming DSD1024 would have to be added to that list in order for MC to actually bitstream it, otherwise it may just convert it to PCM in order to play it.

I personally don't need DSD1024 and I have no music in this format. But I think it would be good to have MC support for DSD1024 bit streaming. Simple because you avoid the discussion: but SW xyz supports this. Being competitive, even if the value not much. My 5 cents to the discussion.

I also have a DAC that support DSD1024 true USB or I2S. I know that the question has been discussed previously, but now there are more 1024 records available and more DAC's that support dsd1024.

Probably best to refer to Jim's answer in the previous topic, as I would be surprised if his/JRiver's stance has changed since then.

I was mildly curious, so I took a look around what DSD128+ material is available for purchase to download, and I can honestly say there's currently no releases in DSD128, DSD256, etc. that would be personally appealing. In fact, all the "worthwhile" DSD content, in my opinion (and that I'm interested in), still comes from SACDs (which is DSD64). There does appear to be some classical DSD128/DSD256 releases, which I may have to check out at some point out of curiosity, but I imagine I wouldn't hear any difference from PCM or DSD64.

I imagine the attitude towards DSD1024 here would be different if there was content actively being released for it, major releases and whatnot. And more (affordable) DACs adding support for it but even then it just seems to me like higher rate DSD is way beyond diminishing returns at this point. And honestly I feel the same way about PCM past 192 kHz, which I never see downloads for on sites like HDTracks or Qobuz.

That is what I was implying.  I get offers of very high rez files but the vast majority lack meaningful artistic content.  They are "demo" tracks.

I second the request for DSD1024 support, as I have purchased a couple albums in that resolution from Native DSD and can bitstream up to DSD1024 USB out with ASIO driver to Spring 3 KTE DAC. Obviously there is not a huge demand for this, but if it's feasible why not offer it to those few audiophile JRiver users who can make use of it?

But I get it that if Jim doesn't like the idea, it will never happen, just like Qobuz streaming integration. I still love JRiver and will continue to purchase annual upgrades, just wish you all weren't so inflexible about certain feature requests.

Lots of 192 kHz downloads available for sale on Qobuz, I've bought a few of them and as a Sublime level subscriber I get 192 kHz albums cheaper than CD quality.

I buy DSD from NativeDSD.com and got a Jane Ira Bloom album there that is offered in all high resolutions, PCM or DSD. So there IS worthy music being sold in these insane high resolutions. Not a lot of it, at least not yet.

Perhaps but, fwiw, most are up-sampled or re-modulated from the original recording.

Under the Tools menu, JRiver has a Listening Test.  Try it, just to see what you can actually hear.
