Audio Stuttering after last update
« on: September 10, 2023, 05:54:43 am »

Hello,

My audio is stuttering terribly while using the default direct sound after updating to the latest Mediacenter version.

I changed it to WASAPI  but I am not able to play 48KHZ Flac files. The message is get is " the output format may not be supported with your hardware. However I can change players and the same file plays just fine using the same device."

I uninstalled Mediacenter and installed an older version and the issue went away. But when it updated again, the stuttering returned.
I sent a message a couple of days ago and it went unanswered, not even viewed.  Is this the correct forum to report this issue?

Below are my system specs.

Which exact two Media Center versions are you testing with? The one that works and the one that does not?

The version that doesn't have the issue is.

MediaCenter310021-x64

And this is the version that give me the issue.

MediaCenter310043-x64

I just did a fresh install with the above version and it started stuttering immediately.

Why not use WASAPI and use DSP Studio > Output format to convert to whatever the device works with?

The only time I've ever seen this kind of thing happening is a few years ago, and it was caused by Windows 10/11's Core Isolation > Memory Integrity feature being enabled in Windows Defender.

That said, I can't reproduce this and MC with WASAPI (exclusive) is working correctly with no issues with stuttering. With the DirectSound output, have you tried increasing the buffer in MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device > Device Settings?

Maybe try using an app like LatencyMon and see if something is causing spikes in DPC latency which in turn can cause stuttering during playback. Might also be a good idea to make sure you're using the latest drivers for all your devices (and not rely on Windows Update to download/update drivers, which aren't usually the latest drivers).

To isolate what change might have caused it, can you try Build 36 and 38?

31.0.36: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,136564.0.html
31.0.38: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,136614.0.html

I have a suspicion, but of course need to confirm.
