NEW: The improved Slow-motion Video Playback
« on: April 30, 2024, 05:23:48 pm »

Description: Improve slow-motion video playback.

Slow-motion playback has been around for quite some time.  So what is new?

1.  DSP Studio window will no longer pop up when slow-motion playback is invoked.
2.  OSD menu for invoking slow motion, using remote control or keyboard.
3.  Muted slow-motion playback options are available.

Details/Instructions:

1. Right-click/Context menu: Right-click in the video window, choose "Slow Motion Playback".  There are 7 options:

  • One Tenth Speed Playback (mute)
  • Quarter Speed Playback (mute)
  • Half Speed Playback (mute)
  • Normal Speed Playback
  • Half Speed Playback
  • Quarter Speed Playback
  • One Tenth Speed Playback

2. OSD:

Use Up and Down arrow keys on a remote control or keyboard, to find "Slow Motion Playback" menu.  Again there are 7 options.  While the OSD is in view, use Left and Right arrow keys to select a playback speed and mute state.  If the speed you want to play is not right next to the current playback speed, you can press the right/left arrow key quickly multiple times to skip over intermediate ones.  For example, to go from "Normal Speed" to "Quarter Speed", press right arrow key twice in quick succession.

A suggestion for OSD UI. Please consider UI that fits to screen. It would be a little easier to perceive if normal was at the center of OSD and the muted and loud then left and right and you can see every option available and what is currently being selected at once. A quick mockup (nothing fancy) attached to illustrate

Are there core commands too or planed? Would be fine.

The command    MCC_SET_DSP_STUDIO_PLAYBACK_RATE is defined as 10085.

Code: [Select]
MCC_SET_DSP_STUDIO_PLAYBACK_RATE,    // [Non-zero integers for percent of normal speed, negative values mute audio]

..Muted slow-motion playback options are available..

  • One Tenth Speed Playback (mute)
  • Quarter Speed Playback (mute)
  • Half Speed Playback (mute)

Mute options don't actually mute the audio when using HDMI to AVR (bitstreaming disabled). EDIT: I also had to set volume internal in MC.

And for all the slow motion options the video is not smooth. It plays smooth for a bit, then pauses for a beat, then smooth again for a bit, then pauses for a beat... repeat.

System Volume works for me too.

I can't reproduce this behavior.

A follow up on Volume type selection.

It depends on the audio device you choose (in Options > Audio > Audio Device).  On my computer there are two devices I can choose from:

Default Audio Device [DirectSound]
Default Audio Device [WASAPI]

If I choose DirectSound, all three volume control types work.  If I choose WASAPI, only Internal Volume and System Volume work, Application Volume does not.

I can't reproduce this behavior.

Using RO Standard => slow motion is smooth.
Using JRVR (even at lowest settings) > slow motion is NOT smooth.

CTRL-J shows no dropped/repeated frames for normal speed playback. As soon as slow motion is invoked the repeated frames quickly climbs and climbs.

Confirmed on three different machines.

Video clock?

Don't have that enabled on any machines, but worth a shot. I tried with Video clock turned on, still the same problem.
