Disable Spotlight Drag from Player Bar
« on: May 21, 2024, 11:47:57 am »

Could we get an option to disable Spotlight or at least the function of dragging from around the Player Bar? When trying to grab the title bar area of the program to relocate the window I get a spotlight tab instead of the window if I don't pause long enough before dragging.

I've unintentionally opened Spotlight many times due to this as well!

It is a long click on the PlayerBar that launches spotlight, not dragging, but yes.

Having multiple ways to launch a function is nice, but if it regularly interferes with other common actions, then it should probably be eliminated.  I know I have had a couple feature requests incorporated over the years that were later removed due exactly to that - accidental activation that conflicted with other functionality.

Since Spotlight can be launched via its icon in the tab-bar icon, and also by the RMB context menu on a track, album cover or artist image, that is already plenty-o-options.

Is this a HPBEME request that you want reversed?

I don't think I requested the PlayerBar long click to launch Spotlight... but I might have... I honestly don't remember?  I was only adding my agreement that this functionality should be reversed based on their experience, and noted that reversing a feature is not without precedence.

That said, there may be others that love to launch spotlight that way - I don't know.  I personally always use the icon to launch, and have not experienced the accidental activation they have. But it does seem plausible that this is possibly an issue for many people, and given the many other ways to launch Spotlight, removing the long-click would seem to be minimally impactful.

Just to be clear, there is no issue if you left click, hold, and drag in the uppermost "border" region (above the PlayerBar and at the same level as the menus, customized toolbar buttons, and Close button).  This is the same region universally used to drag windows.  You only get Spotlight when left clicking in the PlayerBar region.  The sensitive region is nicely revealed if you have Tooltips activated and hover the mouse about.

Personally, I think having a "PlayerBar long click" action is clever, but this screen real estate could potentially become even more valuable if the user could specify which action occurs.  I agree with HPBME in that there are plenty of other ways to activate Spotlight, so for me it's not necessary to have it her, especially since I do not use Spotlight all that often.  However, I would love it if long left click in this relatively large region could activate one of my most used toolbar buttons (which are tiny).  For example, I might choose opening the Options menu, something I do fairly often, or maybe toggling the Tree visibility, etc.  The "PlayerBar long click" action could be user-selected by adding a checkbox in the middle region of the Customize Toolbar popup.  Alternatively, a RMB exclusive option on any custom toolbar button.  Then if nothing is selected, the region reverts to dragging the window (Spotlight would have to be added to the Customize Toolbar list, or a RMB option added to its currently displayed button).

If none of this is deemed possible at this time, then I vote for leaving the current action alone since it does make logical sense to quickly open Spotlight from the PlayerBar (once you realize what is going on).  It's more useful to me as is than assigning additional area for simply dragging a window.

Good idea.
