How can I add an .srt file to a movie file in JRiver?
« on: June 04, 2024, 08:33:34 am »

I have some non english films that have a subtitle track/file ie an .srt file.  I can view these on my laptop via VLC player or MC but with MC i cannot seem to add the srt file.  How do I get MC to see the srt file?

Also, can I convert the file so that the subtitles are permanently displayed on the screen?  Do I need to convert them into a specific format as in MP4 or MKV?  I would like to watch these movies on my large screen, not on my laptop.  My TV also does not seem to be able to see the srt files even though they are in the same location as the video file.

Many thanks.

Are they named the same as the movie?

yes they are.  The subtitle file has  a .srt after it.

Then, start watching the movie.
While it is playing use the up/down arrows to bring up the OSD, and scroll through until you get to the subtitle options, then left/right to choose.

MC will save this choice, so next time, you won't have to do this.

Also, check your options under "Options > Video > Subtitle and Language"
They could be useful to you perhaps...

Alternate method:

- Begin by starting your video.
- Right-click on the video screen to bring up a menu.
- From the menu, select the "Subtitles" option.
- Then, choose "Browse" to locate your subtitles file.
- Navigate through your files and folders to find the correct subtitles file.
- Once you've found it, click on the file to select it, and then click "Open" to load the subtitles.
- The subtitles should now be displayed on your video.

thanks, I will try these.

However,  these still insist on me using MC to watch the movies.  Is there any way to convert the files in MC so that the srt file can be on the movie permanently, or at least so that I can watch the movies via  my TV screen?  It works for other movies, just don't know why its not working with these ones.

I'm not sure if MC can add a subtitle track to an existing video file, but I doubt it. You probably need a software that can do it losslessly, like MKVToolNix.

Yup, MKVToolnix is the way I do it too, and you can set the proper flags (default, forced) at the same time, as well as get rid of subs and audio streams that are not needed. Very easy to use, and the resulting files will be playable in any player, and they will play properly.
