Feature Request - Find Window Locaton
« on: November 06, 2024, 10:33:04 pm »

Not sure if this is the right place or if feature requests are welcomed but...

I would like the Find & Replace window to popup where I last positioned it.  When I'm doing a lot of cleanup I'm having to constantly re-open the window and then moving it to the side.  Even better, and perhaps simpler, would be the addition of an Apply button which could keep the window open.  That would be perfect.

Thanks for considering.

I'll add this to the next build:
Changed: The find and replace tool remembers the last position it was opened to.

Adding an "Apply" button wouldn't work that well I think because the dialog is modal so it blocks everything behind it anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Any chance while you're making that change you could have MC remember the last position, and importantly the size as well, of other dialogs? For me, and I imagine many others, I would love for this capability to be extended to all dialogs or sub-windows that users interact with.

I think we need to tackle them one by one. Each dialog has their own settings for position. If you have a few others you would like to remember just list them and we should be able to do them as well.

There are a number of windows where this would be highly useful, but for me personally, the most desirable would be to remember the sizes of specific DSP windows.  For example:

- I like the EQ window wide but narrow in height, but the analyzer window to be very large
- the parametric EQ could be more of a square format and far smaller than the default size
- a much smaller / square aspect ratio also applies the Effects, Headphone, Tempo and Pitch

MC currently already remembers the position of the DSP window, but as you cycle through the different options, the window just gets bigger to fit whatever option is selected.  But when you return to one that doesn't need near the amount of space (of say what the convolution dialog requires), it does not return to a smaller size, resulting in a large dialog overlaying a big chunk of MC, with lots of wasted space.  If MC remembered what I custom resized each DSP option to across sessions, I would be eternally grateful.

My old man brain may be misremembering, but I swear that is how the MC-DSP window behaved 10 or 15 years ago maybe?  I would love it if that old behavior were resurrected.  Thanks for considering it.

per your suggestion, I noted my requests in an earlier post for MC to remember user sizing for DSP dialogs.  Any progress on this?  Thanks.

It remembers the size, but grows a page if it needs to.

It would be easy to make it also shrink, but I'm not sure if that would be a well received change.

Remembering the last size it was would be another approach, but today that information is not stored.

Shrinking back is exactly what I'm hoping for.  That said, I understand others may not like that behavior to be automatic.

If you can make MC remember what users manually resize each DSP dialog to, and most importantly, retain those custom sizes across MC sessions, then that addresses the situation perfectly!  Is that possible?

Hey Matt,
You mentioned that you didn't think my suggestion of an Apply button would work because of the modal window.  When I was a visual basic coder years ago, and if memory serves me well, I did this all the time—interacting with the parent window object behind the modal window.  So, I'm confused about that.  Also, the Edit Smartlist modal window does exactly this behaviour with an Apply button updating the parent window filter when a new rule is applied.

Are you sure an Apply button couldn't be added to the Find & Replace window - because it really would be useful.

Thanks,
Nicholas

We'll try that for the next build. Testing appreciated. Thanks.

Excellent!  Thank you so so so much Matt.

Hopefully others will find this change useful as well and it's not just me!  Of course they will have to manually resize their windows to see their preferred sizing stick when switching among the DSP options.  To that end, I made a picture of how my various DSP options will be sized for reference in case anybody is interested.

Will this change will also remember each position as well?  If not, I assume the dialog anchor point will be the upper left-hand corner?  Or perhaps the center?  Either way, thank you again Matt.

Hey Matt, thanks for trying to implement this.  Unfortunately the behavior is very erratic.  I assumed having MC remember the dialog size for each DSP option would be straightforward, but the sizes are all over the map. Depending on which DSP option is active when I close the window, it reopens dialogs at different sizes, and not at the size that I "saved".

I have a feeling this might require a lot of back-and-forth to troubleshoot (I'm thinking of the image playback issue we finally resolved a month or so back). So maybe the best path is revert to the prior behavior - I definitely prefer that to what it MC is doing right now.  And it would save you from spending a lot of time spent troubleshooting… win-win, right?

My apologies for pointing you in this direction to begin with.

I just tested some more and it works well for me. Shrink the dialog for a small page. Flip to a big page. Dialog gets bigger. Flip back and it shrinks back down.

Could you describe what isn't working in more detail?

Thanks.

So just to be clear, it is not remembering the size for each DSP page. It just remembers if it's able to shrink back down now when you flip to a smaller page.

Experiencing the same. The window's default size is too small (and if I resize it, it doesn't remember) on a 1440p screen. Can't say I'm a big fan of this change to be perfectly honest, I liked the fixed size I could resize it to and it'd remember it.
