Me bored tonight... so me bug you  a bit more :P
I still use audio catalyst 2.0 to encode in VBR HQ as it's a lot faster than MC9... [at least on my machine].
Something wired comes up though.
The  IDTag v1&2 track # always comes up as 32 on MC9.
Not a big issue as all i have to do is to "fill properties from file name" but that's an extra move to do... as I am Corsican, i am due to family background to be a bit lazy...
that's it really !!!

That's because Audio Catayst uses Xing encoder and not Lame like MJ or MC, Xing is quick indeed but it's very bad in sound quality, start using Lame encoder for the well of your Mp3's and your ears

Double what ChicoSelfs said, stay clear of XING encoder, absolutely horrible quality, unless you like all your high end sounding like watery flub.

LAME rules! Slower, but so worth the wait.

so that's why i had to put it on HQ to get something worth :-[
ok, stupid question : should go with MC9 or Cdex or anything else you suggest... [this the bit where you may advice my french unexperience]... ?

That's kind of funny...in previous MJ versions, track numbering would skip around 32 (track # would be 0). This must be by design to make up for all those zeroed out tracks.

Probably what is happening is catalyst in putting something strange (or even a space) in that tag which MC is interpreting as 32. Use a simple tag editor to check the contents of a problem files' tags.

LAME 3.90 or 3.92 = best quality (using alt preset standard or extreme) - you will sacrifice speed for quality
Might as well use MC for rips/encodes and dump Catalyst. I use EAC for this operation.

i'm doing a test encoding with MC9 on a cd that Xing has always encoded as a big ''pppprrrrrfffffff' !...

let's say that i know nothing about encding and playnig settings... [which is now that untrue !]
what is the best rebdering for encoding as i care more about the sound quality than the file size & time to do it.
the considering than i am using MC9.0.105 with a :

Well...as you figured by now, MC uses the LAME encoder. I'm still using MJ v8 (I come over to the MC9 forum to harass and intimidate :)), but as far as encoding is concerned, they should be similar. So use the MP3 Encoder VBR and set your quality to Normal/High or High (places files in the 192 to 256 kbs range). The sound quality will impress you (should be like night & day vs. Xing).

If your not worried about the portability aspect...then go with ogg. Encoding is much faster, better sound, better tagging, and the coolest filename extension in the business.

Or, if you don't need the files to be portable you can re-encode using MPC.  It will give you bitrates around 160 to 200 and be better than 256 MP3 or high bitrate OGG (-q6).  However, if you have a recent version of MC9 installed, MPC encoding/playback is broken, so you would have to wait until it is fixed.

Also, you mentioned CDex...it's also a good program.
