license issue - downwards compatibility needed
« on: December 10, 2024, 08:00:24 am »

Hello, I need to run MC22 in order to get my old visualization + video playback working. (The vis does not react in my MC27).

I bought MC16 + 19 + 27 (Master license).
My license was not accepted in MC22. (Why is it not downwards compatible?? It should be!)

I can't bring videos to play back when I install my MC19 (it won't download or install the files that are needed for video playback - so I always get an error message).

So I'm stuck. Just need that v22 to work with my license. Please help!

Unfortunately MC22 licenses aren't available anymore and it's not possible to get one, only licenses for the current MC33 are available. If it's not downloading the video plugin files needed, chances are something like a firewall is blocking it.

There is definitely no firewall!!! Just Win10 with that onboard "Defender" at default settings. And no other such tools. Tested on 3 different machines. Same error message on all of them. Never had issues to download or install anything else. So what can I do about it?

Windows 10 and 11 both have the Windows Defender Firewall, which can block this from happening. You'll have to go into the Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security app's settings and make sure outbound and inbound connections are allowed for Media Center.

-> I've just tried that but to no avail. Still the same error message.

Even completely deactivating the firewall (all entries) does not help.

Try to enable logging in MC itself, then try starting a video (to start a plugin download attempt) and after it fails stop logging and post it here. It should hopefully reveal what's happening during the download attempt.

Ok, here you are.
All firewall stuff has been deactivated before opening MC and trying to start a video.

I used MC20 on this machine to show the issue. (it's the same(!) issue on the intended other machine with MC19)

According to the log you're not able to connect to the domain to download the LAV filter plugin dependency needed to playback video. If you look at the log...

Try going to the plugin link in a web browser: https://files.jriver-cdn.com/dependencies/plugins/lav/lav_v53.zip

I can click on it and in the web browser it downloads it for me. If you click on it, does it display an error in the web browser? If there's an error, what does it say? If it does display an error, does it also error on https://files.jriver-cdn.com/ ?

In that case the only conclusion I can come to is that something on the system is blocking it. Because it should be able to access it like a web browser can. Also make sure the JRService.exe and JRWeb.exe and JRWorker.exe apps are allowed through both Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall in addition to the main Media Center executable file. You can also try changing the web engine in MC's Options. If it's set on Internet Explorer (which is long gone) try setting to Chromium or even vice versa and see if that helps.

It'd probably be easier to add MC and its JRService/JRWeb/JRWorker executables to Defender's exclusions list and create outbound and inbound rules for them too in Windows Firewall than just straight up disabling both Defender and the Firewall which I would never recommend doing. Taming them by adding the Defender exclusion rules and Firewall inbound/outbound rules and leave them enabled.

Defender taming: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html

For the Firewall just create new rules for the Media Center executable and for JRService, JRWeb and JRWorker in both the inbound and outbound rules sections allowing the connection for them, preferably over both TCP and UDP.

"In that case the only conclusion I can come to is that something on the system is blocking it."

-> Can you tell why absolutely nothing is "blocked" when installing MC22 and starting a video on the same machine (installed MC22 today and started a video : files were downloading flawlessly - everything went fine). This alone tells me that the issue is not here on my side.

"Also make sure the JRService.exe and JRWeb.exe and JRWorker.exe apps are allowed through both Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall in addition to the main Media Center executable file.

-> That makes no sense to me: when firewall and all other (virus) Defender stuff is OFF (and it was! - I watched it while trying to start a video) it won't block anything. That "Taming Windows Defender" stuff is way too much of a pita. I just want to watch some videos and listen to some music and I have no need to become an IT specialist because of it.

"An issue with the certificate store on the PC in question? Is it windows 7?"

-> I've already mentioned it's Win10. And I have the latest OS updates.

Is this issue related to this recent-ish change?

Btw, I just got feedback from a friend. I asked him to install MC19 on his Win10 computer and guess what? Same thing. So that's the fourth Win10 computer showing the same behavior with MC19 (or MC20).

--> I could not find such a setting under MC20 "Options". Where is that?

I think it's under view.

That looks like it SHOULD be the explanation but it wouldn't explain why it's downloadable with a browser.
Seems like there ought to be a way to manually install it from the download.

Yeah, how can I do that? (In which folder shall I put the files?)

unzip the individual files into:
AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center xx\Plugins\lav
where xx is the version of MC and the file to download is from MC's log.

Took a while to figure out but the reason this no longer works automatically is that the cloud servers we use no longer permit http downloads and the MC code can't handle the redirect from http to https that's provided. MC version 28 and newer has https redirects which is why they work.

Martin166,
You need to upgrade to MC33.
