Video dropping frames after a 1/2 hour of watching [Solved]
« on: January 07, 2025, 08:50:00 pm »

I've been having the above issue for the past few months with JRVR. I get no dropped frames on the OSD till, again, about a half-hour has passed while watching, and then the frames drop continuously till I hit the mouse or stop the movie/show and restart it in MC. It doesn't matter if I'm watching a 4K or a 1080p mkv, nor if HDR is tone mapped or passed through. The problem seems to have coincided with me getting a new TV (the LG OLED C4; it didn't happen with my old Samsung QLED TV), so the problem could be a setting on it or the TV + something with JRVR, or maybe it's some variant of the Windows 11 24H2 OS update or even something with the presentation queue.

I'm just hoping someone could maybe help me troubleshoot the issue (note there's a log attached).

My equipment + some settings:
--Windows 11, 24H2 (OS build 26120.2705)
--Nvidia 3060 card, Studio Driver version 566.36, VSync = "On," Power Management = "Prefer Maximum Performance"
--HDMI from the PC to a Marantz SR5010-->HDMI to the LG OLED

MC (33.0.55) Settings
--Display Settings automatic change mode = "On"
--Hardware Accelerate = Checked
--Video Clock = Checked

JRVR Settings are attached.

If you're referring to Windows power mode, I've always had it set to "High Performance."

Could be graphics.  Could be CPU temperature.

It's not JRiver.

Does the problem go away if you put the Samsung tv back in place of the LG? (Assuming you still have the old tv).

If you don't have the old tv why not try plugging the HTPC directly into the LG to eliminate any AVR/TV interaction (only for a test, I appreciate the Marantz doesn't support eARC). Try different HDMI cables (HDMI certified).

Also maybe try running JRVR settings at the lowest possible using the 'performance' preset or wind back your scaling to bilinear, disable image doubling and untick Sharpening, tick 'Trade quality for performance option 'Allow HW decoder.....'. Just maybe the 3060 is going bad and only glitches after reaching a certain operating temp under load (pure speculation of course).
Enable JRVR>Debugging>Log Frame Timing and post the resulting log (saved in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 33\JRVRFrameLog.log).
Are you monitoring the GPU load in real time with something like MSI Afterburner using the OSD display?
Finally, if you have another system/laptop available try plugging that into the LG and see what results you get.

Thanks, terrym@tassie, for the suggestions.

I tried the following:
•   I still have the Samsung TV, but hooking it back up in place of the LG gave the same result: continuous dropped frames after anywhere from 15-30 minutes; so it's not the LG TV.
•   I also tried running JRVR on the “Performance” preset to the LG with the Marantz AVR, but it also gave the same dropped-frames result.
•   My cables are Cable Matters and are HDMI certified; regardless, I swapped the one out from AVR to TV and again from PC to TV and still got the same dropped-frames result each round (I played an mkv with the AVR in the chain and again without it there, each time with a different Cable Matters HDMI cable).
•   As noted immediately above, I hooked the PC directly to the LG TV and again got the same result.
•   I did try the MSI Afterburner with OSD but didn’t see any difference in the GPU or CPU numbers before and after the frames start dropping: no temperature spikes with either, nothing that seems different.
•   I also tried a laptop with MC at minimal video settings and had no dropped frames after 40+ minutes on the same 4k mkv I’ve been using.

It definitely seems to be something with the PC, but I'm not sure what. I may try to reinstall Windows to see if that makes the problem go away.

Here's a link to the JRVR Debugging log: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qcRihzyDJRwY0r-RFQ1d4111-glOaQL7/view?usp=drive_link

Any other thoughts?

That's good progress, I know it may not feel like it but at least you know exactly where to look for a solution now. I can't view the log via the link you posted, I get 'Access Denied".

A further thought (long shots really), use DDU https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/ to completely remove the existing Nvidia driver and then allow Windows update to install it's own 'baseline' driver version. You could also try re-seating the Nvidia card in the motherboard. If you have onboard Intel/AMD CPU graphics available, try eliminating the Nvidia card altogether.
A really strange fault.....

I'm cautiously optimistic that after reinstalling Windows 11, everything's back to normal. I haven't watched an entire film yet, but I ran my test 4K mkv for an hour continuously last night before I had to go to bed and watched another hour of a 1080p mkv just now and didn't have the problem in the original post at all. Since I'm under the weather, I'll watch another whole film here in a while (the 1080p I just watched I had to keep stopping for various reasons, minus the last hour) and report back.

Incidentally, I'd considered doing the DDU reinstall of the graphics driver (I've unfortunately had to do that a couple of times over the years), but I decided to just clean up Windows. Seems to be working so far. Fingers crossed!

Thanks again for your help, terrym@tassie!

Just an update: I watched a full 4K mkv with all my settings from above and no dropping frames after 15-30 minutes or at all!

Looks like the Windows reinstall did the trick in some fashion. Thanks again for all suggestions.
