After ~60min, MC goes silent, no output - help, please
« on: Yesterday at 09:31:35 pm »

Something weird started happening this week: after playing audio files for an hour or so, MC31 will suddenly go silent- no output.  When I look at my screen, MC volume is still 100% according to the yellow "slider", and the little frequency response displays on either side of the song's title display are still bouncing around.  But no sound through my speakers.

I tried <stop> then <play>, that didn't work.
I hit <stop>, exited MC, restarted MC and then <play>, that didn't work.
I restarted my computer, that didn't work.
I turned my computer off, restarted everything.  That didn't work.

Is this a known problem with an easy solution?  A known problem which requires a fresh installation?

It could also be a hardware problem on my end.  I don't think it's my pre-pro, but I do have a USB-SPDIF converter in my 2-channel chain and it could be bad.  I'll see if I can figure out a way to bypass it without messing up the Zones I have configured, since they work just the way I want them to.

Try power cycling the sound devices.  Everything but the computer.

MC is probably not the issue, but as further sanity checks within MC:

(1) Confirm the audio device has not changed:
Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device

(2) Hover over the DSP button in the Playerbar and confirm everything looks normal in that popup.

(3) In left panel:  Services & Plug-ins > Media Network, confirm all servers you expect to see running are in fact running.  Also try hitting the tab "SSDP (Device Discovery)" > Rescan in that window (it's not clear to me from your post whether networking is involved).

It could be a cable, it could be something on the hardware going into "standby" or something like that. It could be a lot of things which makes it hard to diagnose. I agree with Jim that power cycling everything could help just in case something's gone screwy in the chain somewhere. Cables would be my next guess and like Mark said checking if the audio device has changed or not when it goes silent could also be telling, if it disappears from the list that could also mean a cable or something in the chain has gone screwy or something else is happening.

I convinced myself it's a hardware problem.  The first couple of times it happened I solved it by cycling MC, my computer or both, so I thought it was a software problem.  I modified my Zone Switch to take the suspect hardware out of the system and everything ran fine.

Thank you for your help, JimH, markf2748 and Awesome Donkey.
