5.1 WAV (FLAC file) incorrect channel mapping
« on: April 07, 2025, 11:32:53 am »

Hi. I hope someone helps me in this direction.
Of course JR plays bit perfect (DSD 2.0, WAV, DTS), however I noticed the 5.1 WAV files do not have correct mapping (Center goes SL, for example).
I tried connecting AVR via HDMI, RPi5 with HDMI (have no windows laptop to try).
Corresponding DTS track (different file) has correct mapping.
DSP is set to Output Encoding = "None" and Channels = "Source number of channels".
I played a file from foobar2000 from my MacBook Pro and it plays perfectly. So it is not a matter of my laptop nor "incompatibilities" with AVR.
Something is wrong with my setup or something else? It's 2/2 devices JRiver streams wrong channel mapping.
Hopefully this thread will be useful to other folks.

LibreELEC plays correctly 5.1 WAV files.
What's going on with JR? ::) ::) ::)

Try 7.1 in JRiver.

Or use DSP Studio to move channels.  See the wiki.

There's no wiki about channel mapping. I had extensively searched before the post. Can you please send me the link to this particular setting? I would be happy.  :)
Setting the output channels to 5.1. or 7.1 seems not related the wrong channel mapping. I tried them both without success.

Connecting JR via HDMI to AVR seems to miss the bit perfect (DTSwav FLAC files cannot lie).

I am not happy to say that, foobar2000 > JR when playing my music in the laptop or connecting directly to AVR via HDMI, except the FB2K ugly user interface.

Streaming DSD64 2.0 from a vw file to my AVR it does not work correctly either (another thread open).

[Update] This is definitely a bug or a wrong implementation in JR. I will sincerily apologise if it's not the case.
Forcing output to 5.1 or 7.1 speakers kills the bitperfect play (DTSWAV/FLAC play only noise).
Maybe I should forget Mch WAV in JR then? Sad but true.
And I am not here to make JR haters happy or to join them.

I need a solution for such basic functionality.
I need no fancy lights and bulbs, no room correction, MC mix, additional zones, Volume levelling/control, Equaliser x2, Effects, Tempo and Pitch. Let them be. I need no miracles.
Just play the files bit perfectly.
You give me that, I will be happy JR user.
Thanks again folks and sorry for the long message(s).

Wiki page As-is
---
Order Channels
This options provides a means to reorder the channels. This can be used instead of the #Mixing option if you have to move a lot of channels around. However this option suffers the limitation of only supporting the named 7.1 channels so it's a fairly niche option.
----

I had to search myself to find out that, Speaker setup may be different within OS but it is consistent within same OS, regardless of the version evolution. MacOS has always a specific setup, Linux another one, Windows another one.
I would expect the channel order to be properly set up out of the box for each OS and to not have to reinvent the wheel once more.

Wiki page as it SHOULD be
--- existing whatever text ---
MacOS:
5.1 speaker setup. Swap Center with Subwoofer.
L/R - LFE/C - RL(7.1)/RR(7.1) - SL/SR

Linux:
5.1 speaker setup. Swap Center with Subwoofer, Bring Surround Left/Right between Left/Right and LFE/Center
L/R - SL/SR -LFE/C - RL(7.1)/RR(7.1)

Windows: ?

What is the full version of MC that you're using?

I have a full license v29 (linked to the same email address with my forum account).
Since the behaviour is the same with v33, I posted here.
Luckily I found myself the solution.
Maybe it would be nice idea to amend the Channel order in a future version to provide clarity.
Add a new column there. the first one to be stable and the second one to be reorder.
The result after remapping would something like below:
MacOS
Default ChannelRemapped Channel (drag to reorder)
LeftLeft
RightRight
CenterSubwoofer
SubwooferCenter
Rear Left (used in 7.1)Rear Left (used in 7.1)
Rear Right (used in 7.1)Rear Right (used in 7.1)
Surround LeftSurround Left
Surround RightSurround Right

and
Linux based
Default ChannelRemapped Channel (drag to reorder)
LeftLeft
RightRight
CenterSurround Left
SubwooferSurround Right
Rear Left (used in 7.1) Subwoofer
Rear Right (used in 7.1)Center
Surround LeftRear Left (used in 7.1)
Surround RightRear Right (used in 7.1)

JR works perfectly now also in my RPi5 OS full version.
My quest reached the end, happily.
Thank you for your hard work.
