Feature Request: File Properties
« on: December 26, 2002, 01:46:23 pm »

Right now when we create new fields we have the ability to add them to existing groups, I'd like the ability to also create new groups and to move existing property fields into other groups.
As well as this I'd like the ability to change the order that fields are in in the property window, preferably by dragging and dropping.
For me the current field ordering makes little or no sense as I'd want name at the top, followed by artist, album, track number, year, rating etc.

It might seem like a little thing I'm being picky about being able to re-order the fields but it's one of those little features that I think a lot of users would find very endearing.

Also, I'm trying out using MJ for my holliday photo's and one thing I find it really lacks compared to some other programs I've found is the ability to create a list of keywords and to then be able to simply check a checkbox to quickly put a pic into that category.
I know I could create tons of fields with 'yes/no' values but this would give me a huge list and is not a very dynamic way of adding new fields to a db as I'm browsing my photos. Also it would mean one extra click per item and for say: peoples names, where I average 5 people per picture and I have 4000 pictures this would mean an extra 20,000 clicks which I'm sure you can understand is a LOT. Also, adding a new persons name would be a long slow process.

Ideally what I'd like is to be able to click on a button and to have a window similar to the one used when an item in the search bar is clicked on with a big list of values that I can simply go down and check. I'd lilke a button on this window to let me 'add new db item'.
I'd also like to be able to group items so that I could have a few different groups like:
place
people
etc

for groups I would have a LOT of values for.
I could then go down the list in the people group and check the boxes to represent who was in the picture.
This is how portfolio does it and its a nice easy to use method.

Next Feature
You've also said your going to create seperate fixed states we can use of view schemes etc so we can use different views for like images or audio, I'd like to request that there's also the ability for the fields displayed in the properties window to change as this would allow me to have tons of different properties for pictures and tons for video and tons of audio and for the properties window to still remain pretty clear and related to the items I was dealing with. Otherwise it's going to get hugely cluttered with options that have nothing to do with the media type I am dealing with.

Next Feature
I'd like the 'memory' of the properties window which right now remembers if it's visible or not visible to be independant for the library window and for the playing now window. I usually want it out when in the library but rarely want it when in the playing now window. It's annoying have to keep toggling it each time I change from library to playing now.

You got my vote on all 3.

Have you posted any of your ideas to the wishlist?

Errm. Stupid question. Where does one find the wishlist?

Cheers.

I haven't.
Mainly because last time I used the wishlist I just found it highly antique feeling.
I could vote 100 times for my item if I'd wanted to which would make it seem like everyone wanted it.
By posting them here people can vote on them and the MJ staff can say what they think of the ideas.

The whole interaction level is just so much nicer here than with the wish list.

And the 'Wish List' can be found using the 'Interact' link at the top of this page.

I always assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that the Wishlist logged IP addresses, thus at least minimizing the amount of duplicate votes.

I have a tendency to post feature requests here more than there as well (half of my bug report is feature requests and enhancement ideas). But I do still poke around on there from time to time, and I know the JRiver guys do as well. The voting system there is nice. But I agree that the interaction here is better. I wish there were some way of combining the two functions.

Go Keywords!

Conceptually, keywords seem to be similar to playlists or more acurrately, you can use playlists to implement keyword idea. (OR IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?)

Nevertheless, unlike playlists the keywords should be stored in file headers locally. That would make them more reliable against database crashes.

One Note:
The keywords should be addable to view schemes just like playlists.

Another Note:
The paper/book/library organizer program Procite (www.procite.com) has both keywords and groups (similar to playlists). Maybe some day, MC can replace procite as well!

Ok - Here's a feature request that I'm begging comes into a build to be released soon.

Firstly - When creating new columns - I can add my own list of values for a drop down list by seperating them with a | but unfortunately, when the actual list appears in the properties window it is not in the order I created it.
As such I have a drop down list for a field called Album Rating like this:
Amazing
Bad
Good
OK
Poor

Not exactly the way I planned for the list to be. It makes it really confusing when giving albums a rating.
Could you PLEASE make them stick to the order we put them in.

Also, my new field 'Album Rating' appear right at the top of the properties window. It's definitely not the most important field to me and I'd like it to appear nearer the bottom. Right now it's just done alphabetically.
Could it please be done so we can sort the properties into the order we want.

I know these might seem like minor things but they are important to useability and they'll be done at some point I presume, so sooner rather than later might be nice :)

Thanks!! :)

Bumping this just to remind as well as it's features which you might or might not want to consider. Hopefully might is closer to being the right word :)
