Media Center 9.0.89 beta
« on: December 18, 2002, 04:41:25 am »

Media Center 9.0.89 beta is available.

This is beta software -- some things don't work, some things may crash, and your database and tags may not be totally safe.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download here:

[this build pulled because of a problem with CD drives on Win98 and WinME]

Changes

1. Fixed: Internal CD burner was creating corrupted data CD's under certain circumstances.
2. Fixed: Internal CD burner now writes files to data CD's in proper order (according to list).
3. Fixed: TV recording from Media Scheduler didn't work.

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help and support.

prior to this version I have used "source bitdepth" in playback settings.

With this setting I can't play back in 0.89. When changed to 16-bit, playback is ok.

OK, I know I just questioned when the next release would be but putting one out at 7:41 AM when I can't download or test it for at least 12 hours is just plain mean.  ;) ;D ;) ;D

I can't rip anything with this one.

CD copy window is blank - no matter how I try and select the files from the cd/dvd/handhelds icon.

I cannot play a cd anymore - when hitting play, MC says this:
"The volume labeled "Compact disc" was not found, would you like to try again"

*correction*:

MC is going on and off in contact with the cddrive.
After rebooting MC could actually play and rip cd's, without the above phenomena.

Choose Burn CD
Select and add tracks from the library
Under options, select Write CD-text
Change CD -text
Burns all tracks, then get this error msg:

"Invalid field in CDb"

Hit close, CD is burned fine, plays and all okay

Don't know if this has been brought up before or not...

For the last 10 or 20  (or so) builds I have noticed that MC9 will sometimes just quit with no message of any kind.  I mean it just goes away... is no longer running.

I can re-load it & MC9 will continue where it left off usually with no problem.

This sometimes happens after a few songs are played, other times it may run for a couple of hours before it does it's disappearing act.

Sometimes it does not happen at all.

It seems to entirely random.

I recall this was an issue in the very early builds with WMA files but I thought that was corrected.

Just experienced this with 0.89, when I was in a burning session. MC just went away.

Thank you for new v. "Exotic characters" still don't work though and I still can't burn. Also same problem with ripping as above. MJ says it's finished ripping when I hit the copy-buttton, i.e. before it has started. It assigns tags to some of the CD-tracks from another CD I ripped several days ago (from memory - not from YADB).  In v.88 tracks were spontaneously assigned with coverart from an unrelated CD.  Can't test that in this v. as I can not rip.

Turned CD-text off, burned another CD.  Came out okay, but got this msg:

Logical unit not ready, long write in progress.

Had to hit close, but the CD came out okay, except no tag info.

Ripping o.k. now after reboot. Sorry about the premature bug report. I still can't burn inside MJ and MJ doesn't recognize characters æ-ø-å in tree view.

The image file problem is inherited from former versions (back to MJ8) and persists in this version. I keep images inside files. One particular image is "stuck" in memory and gets assigned to every new file unless I manually delete it.

Bugs:
1. CD burning does not work at all now...just produces an empty disk even though it said it burned 100+ tracks.  (no...not Test mode either)

Update:
Turns out it did burn, but it took MC/Windows 2000 a while to 'realize' it had a disc with data (even after an eject).  But, item #6 below is still an issue.

2. The 'Use internal burner' and 'Use internal ASPI layer' options are gone...uh oh...now, MC is no longer an option for burning (it appears...cuz at least Goldenhawk kind of worked for 'some' burn scenerios).

3. Modifying folder names in a data CD burn list always crashes MC (all versions up to this point).

4. Restore burn lists from a saved file can easily crash MC (seems to be when files in the saved list are no longer located in MC or on the PC...ie, deleted).

5. The % and size used and available stats in a CD burn are never right or updated correctly.  I can start a burn list with 100 files and MC says 0% (0 files, 0.0MB used, 627.4.MB left)...ah what?

6. MC reports a data CD-RW is ready for writting even when it has data on it.  Then, when you burn on it, MC says it burned ok...but, actually, MC didn't burn anything...sike!!

- Exporting a playlist to m3u uses playlist.m3u as name in stead of the playlist name

- Playing a stream web station, MC adds a playlist and imports the stream as a file.

- Left tree collapses on startup

- Uploading more than 100 files to my Handheld device gives an error at the end "error opening file" and not all files are uploaded then

- When sending e.g. 5 mp3's to external tool MP3Gain, it opens 5 times MP3Gain i.s.o. Adding those 5 files to 1 MP3Gain and those 5 MP3Gain instances have all the same file in it.

- When deleting a file with shift from Playing now when a song is playing, the focus of the currently playing song is gone

Adding new field names, or changing the display names resets the whole sort order for all the columns. A bit annoying, in fact very annoying :)

rightclicking on a song in playlist that is currently playing, and choosing "remove" makes MC go away (close) without any error prompt or anything else than just disappearing

-Cannot rip to any format, including wav and ape.
-Cannot convert from wav or ape to any other format
-When playing a CD, "Stop" will not stop it. Closing Media Center will not stop it. Manually eject is the only way.

Request:
maybe just aesthetics, but imo, the favourites menu is upside-down.
Would be a lot nicer if the menu options stayed at the top of the list, instead of the way it is atm, with the favourite links being added to the top, pushing the options further and further down the screen.

Bug/Request:

Still getting momentary lockups when clicking a playlist group.  Seems to me that it would resolve the performance issue and make more logical sense for a UI perspective that if you click a Playlist group you *do not* display in the media window all the songs that are part of that playlist group.  The media window should be blank.  Only if I click a playlist should the songs be displayed.

Others might disagree, maybe it's just me, but it would solve a performance issue and make logical sense.

Bug:

Highlighting a smartlist rule and clicking delete can cause MC to crash.  Strangely this usually only happens if you select hightlight the rule from left to right.  If you put your cursor before the rule and hit the Delete key, it doesn't crash.

« Reply #24 on: December 19, 2002, 11:39:11 am »

I've been having CD-ROM problems with 9.0.89, but to give you a better idea of the problem, I'll first explain my problem as it first occurred in .88:

On the recommendations of the folks at iPodlounge.com, I downloaded Media Center 9.0.88 to give it a whirl.  I wanted to give it a short test drive before committing (i.e., reformatting my iPod for use with MC9).  I had a nagging feeling that I was sure to run into problems and I knew exactly what it would be - ASPI drivers and my CD-ROMs (both SCSI drives).  Turns out I was right.

I wanted to test the CD ripping ablilities first, so I dropped in a CD, selected one song and clicked copy.  Immediately, a dialogue box popped up informing me that I was missing the necessary ASPI drivers and offered to download and install them automatically - okay, no big deal I thought.  After the download and install, I repeated the test process, but got the same missing drivers dialogue box over and over.  A reboot also made no difference.

My next step was to manually update the ASPI drivers.  I downloaded the latest version from Adaptec.  They were packaged as a .exe file and for some reason, I could not get it to run ("Cannot find file C:\aspi_471a2.exe (or one of it's components)..."), so I changed the filename to .zip and extracted all the files.  I ran the "Intall.bat," as Adaptec's instructions told me to do, but nothing happened.

So I deleted the following ASPI components from C:\Windows\Sytem, C:\Windows\System32, and the J River directory:
ASPI32.SYS
WNASPI32.DLL
WINASPI.DLL

I manually copied the new ASPI files to the same directories, rebooted, then started MC9 up again.  When trying to rip, I repeatedly got this error: "Read track failed. CD is changed."

Next I followed these steps which I got here: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/xp2.htm

copy ONLY the appropriate drivers for these Win32 OSes: ASPI32.SYS (in %systemroot%\System32\Drivers) + WNASPI32.DLL (in %systemroot%\System32).
Open Windows Explorer and delete (if present) WOWPOST.EXE + WINASPI.DLL from %systemroot%\System.
Reboot when done.
Run ASPICHK.EXE (also included) to make sure you have properly upgraded to v4.72.
Now copy & paste text between lines below into Notepad and save this as a .REG file [name doesn't matter, only the extension does]:

-----Begin cut & paste here-----
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Aspi32]
&qu ot;ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"Type"=dword:00000001
" ;Start"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Aspi32\Parameters]
"ExcludeMiniports"=""

------End cut & paste here------
Finally, double-click on the REG file in Windows Explorer.
Reboot one more time.
Done.

After this, I got the same "Read track failed..." error from MC9.

Next, I unistalled .88 and installed .89.  Now, when I try to rip a song off a CD in .89, it says "Initializing," my CD-ROM spins up, but then the program hangs and I have to end it in the task manager.  BTW, with both .88 and .89, I can listen to CD's, just can't rip 'em.  It looks like a really great program with a lot of promising features and I don't want to give up on it this easy.  There's got to be a way to fix this.

Whew!

Thanks,

Mike

I tried to burn an audio CD to three different 1394 attached CD Writers. All failed with a dialog "Can't Start The Write".

This is a brand new machine and brand new Firewire CD-Rs. The only common item is that on both PCs the 1394 card is a Sound Blaster Audigy EX.

Doesn't seem to matter what I try in this version, as soon as I try to connect to a running Media Server, I get a message that I can't connect to the specified server. Then when I go check the server, it has crashed.

Just a very minor 'issue' if it is even that: When going into "Help" and clicking "Interact..." in MC 9 the website forum for MJ 8 comes up. Maybe this should be changed to MC 9. Gee I think this will be the easiest thing to fix around here.
Now regarding funky characters... I think that will be a huge deterrent to non US customers since they will loose those characters in the tags (if most of my files had those characters and just by running MC 9 once I would have lost them it would make me mad as hell to go through potentially thousands of files just to correct this and I would probably not use MC 9 again). Think about this from a publicity/sales standpoint.
Luckily for me it is just a few files whose tags got truncated and I got them under control, but I would still love to see a fix.
Keep up the good work though and hang in there. It is an excellent product. Seasons greetings!

Latest version will no longer play my avi files.  They always worked in previous versions.  Says I do not have Windows Media Player...I have WMP 9 RC1.  They worked with previous evrsion I was using (9.0.84).  They don't actually play in WMP anymore but surely MC9 should atleast recognise that media player is installed??

I bought MJ about a month ago  ( I think I purchased the beta nine version--the price was just under 25 dollars).  I just got an email yesterday stating that MJ9 is about to go out of beta and officially become MC, and that for about 8 dollars I can get the new MC.

If I bought MJ9, does the 8 dollar charge still apply?  How can I tell if I have a MJ9 or MJ8 license  (I'm pretty sure I bought the beta 9, but I'm not a hundred percent sure).  I will pay the 8 dollars if I have to, but if I don't need to, great.  I want to make sure I get it right so none of my stuff gets messed up.  I originally wanted MJ just for music management and the ipod plug in, but I kinda like the stuff in (the soon to be released) MC.  Thanks!

Just finally upgraded to 9.0.  I had 7. before, and decided it was time to pay up.  Anyway, I see that this now supports DVDs (which is part of why I bought it  ::) ), but when I try to play them, I get:
The DVD disk can not be accessed. Either your system is missing some components for playing DVD video, or another application is currently using those components.
Any ideas/help?

I've been having CD-ROM problems with 9.0.89, but to give you a better idea of the problem, I'll first explain my problem as it first occurred in .88: ....
Look in your MJ program directory. There should be a file called wnaspi32.dll. If it's there, MJ should not be asking you to install Aspi. With 9.0.88 you have to enable this "internal" aspi on the cd writer settings page and restart MJ. However, in 9.0.89, MJ always uses this internal aspi on winNT,2K,XP systems.
I just loaded up a SCSI cd drive on my XP system and did a fresh install of MJ 9.0.89 and it worked fine for ripping and playback. Try using "uncompressed wave" for the encoder just to rule out encoder plugin problems.

You need to have a directX compatible Mpeg decoder installed on your system. Or, in simple language, install the player software that came with your DVD drive first, then MJ should work. Unless you have PowerDVD, then we may have to point you to another place to get the mpeg filter.

Can you burn ok using other software with the Audigy firewire connection? The only reason I ask is that we've had reports of problems using the Audigy firewire with Apple's IPOD unit.

Bugs:

One at a time:

2. Which scenarios will only work for you with Goldenhawk? We should be able to make MJ work as well or better in any scenario. 8)

3. Can't reproduce this. Maybe if you gave me a specific series of steps that cause a crash, I could replicate it here.

4. I also can't reproduce this. Maybe you could email a folder scheme file for me to try.

5. Yep, should be fixed in next release.

6. Not sure I understand this one. A data CD *should* be ready for writing, as long as the disk hasn't been closed (which MJ never does except in audio CD burning). As for why the burned files aren't showing up, is it similar to problem #1? Do they show up eventually? I'll do some more tests on this.

Thanks for the testing Z!

AND it doesn't recognize my burner.
Looks like there's a problem on Win98 & ME installs. Look for a file called "wnaspi32.dll" in your MJ program directory. If it's there, rename it or delete it. Let us know if that fixes the problem. You'll have to exit MJ before you do this.

Thanks!

Choose Burn CD
Select and add tracks from the library
Under options, select Write CD-text
Change CD -text
Burns all tracks, then get this error msg:

"Invalid field in CDb"

Hit close, CD is burned fine, plays and all okay
Oh no, don't tell me I have to get an HP burner as well. I'm getting quite a collection. I'll see if I can guess what the problem might be. Keep bugging us about it if it isn't fixed.

The problem I have is that when I send a lot of MP3s to the burner in DATA mode, I will go to the options button to change the way the directories are put on the CD.  In my case I changed the setting from Artist/Album to just Album.  Then MC9 crashed.  To get arround this, I sent one file to the burner then changed the directory structure then sent the rest of the files to the burner.  Don't know if that's the same problem ZRocker has, but it sounded similar.

Well I'm not sure why, but when I installed the DVD software, everything worked fine.  Why would it have worked fine with DVDExpress, but I needed to reload everything for Media Center? Just curious.  Thanks for helping me solve the problem!

Alright Guys, I took the plunge and gave MC9 a try, I new I would get hooked as soon as I tried it and sure enough I did, All this after I just started to get used to MJ8.

I was doing a batch look up for cover art and MC9 crashed with no error windows.

Question,,, does any one know where I can get cover art, for some reason I was able to get it no problem with MJ8 but had deleted the art a short time ago to clear up some space but now space is not an issue and MC9 doesnt get the art as well as MJ8.

Thanks guys..

JohnT,

On the crashing during renaming of folders, it just happens everytime I try to burn a data CD and I have say 10 folders (Album Title).  If I highlight the first folder (in the Org Tree), press F2 to rename, type a new name, press enter, press Down arrow (to highlight next folder) and continue this process down the list, MC usually crashes on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rename...everytime.  Just tried it again...MC crashed while renaming the 2nd folder (only 3 in this burn list).

On the MC crashing on a Load Folder Structure, I sent you an email with an MJF file that crashes MC everytime I attempt to load it.

Thanks...

Bugs:
1. When creating a data CD burn list, MC sometimes decided to duplicate files/folders in the list on its own.  I had a burn list of 99 files in 12 folders (by Artist).  I then sorted the list by Folder name (clicked the column heading) and then did Update Order.  Now, I went back to Playing Now and then back to the CD burn list and there were 106 files (magaically) in the burn list and MC had duplicated one folder (with 7 files in it)...I could see the exact same folder (Artist) listed twice in the data burn list now.  Of course, attempting to delected either duplicated folder/files caused MC to crash...MC was just too confused by now.

2. On the same 99 file list (with 12 folders), I attempted a Re-Arrange Folder and MC crashed...was trying Artist\Album.  This problem is on-again, off-again problem that seems to show up occasionally in MC.  I built a one track burn list and changed the Re-Arrange option and MC didn't crash...so, I was able to Re-Arrange by cancelling and then adding the 99 files to a new burn list (with the arrange order set at Artist\Album by default).

3. When viewing a data CD (of MP3s) in My Computer or CD, DVD & Handhelds node, the Track Info (File Props) Format tab displays 'Input plug-in did not return format information'.  Seems like MC should be able to display the normal Format tab information (v1 & v2 tag data) for a data CD...it can display this information when viewing the same files on a harddisk (not imported).

4. Everytime MC finishes burning a data CD MC just crashes (disappears).  Each time the CD burned was ok (finished), just MC crashed when returning (I guess).  I was burning data CDs at 700mb capacity (about 99 to 110 files in about 10 to 15 directories).  NOTE:  In all these cases (tests), the files existed on another PC accessed via a LAN connection (if that matters).

Bugs:
1. The Rename From File Properties... feature no longer recognizes some of the stock (built-in) token names, like: [TRACK #] and [NAME].  Instead, MC tries renaming files and using literally [TRACK #] and [NAME]...instead of doing the proper substitutions.

2. File Properties From Filename... does not work now.  I attempted to use this function with [TRACK #]-[ARTIST]-[NAME] selected (from dropdown list) on files clearly in this format and MC found/matched nothing (as if the template did not match filename format).

1)Clicking a ***.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

2)Clicking on a ***.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

3)Somebody reported this before, but I have the same problem: Playing a stream web station, MC9 adds several instance of the playlist and imports the stream as a file.

4)Occasional, seemingly random crash, usually diring some play list operation.

Also:

4) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.

5)If you check the remember volume setting option; MC9 does not reset it back to pre-MC9 level when the program is closed.

Bugs:
1. Using MC's My Computer to Copy and/or Move files via drag-and-drop does not work.  MC's lets you 'act' like it will do it, but MC actually does nothing (no copy...no move).  It would sure be nice if you had true Windows Explorer functionality within MC's My Computer support...like even right-click drag-and-drop support (with the popup action menu).

Cover Art doesn't update when tracks change
« Reply #49 on: December 22, 2002, 08:46:59 am »

Hey All,

I have noticed since I moved to MC9 beta(!) that frequently the cover art won't update when a new track plays with different cover art.

This happens EVERY time in Hairstyle, if I flick between Hairstyle and normal fullscreen MC9 it updates, but if I stay in hairstyle it doesn't.

Please fix this!

Also a question for the gurus: I am forever having to modify the template for "Rename file from properties"....is there a way of populating the drop down list with MY templates?

thanks team, a great product!!
