Where have my songs gone?

I am running a 20Gb iPOD with MC9.0.88 with XP.

Doing a full sync leaves me with the following:
MC shows 1712 songs on my hard drive.
MC reports 1300 songs on my iPOD.
My iPOD shows 238 songs!

There's 12G spare space.

I have tried this several times with similar results. Please help. Just registered MC today and am getting frustrated that the iPOD doesn't seem to work with this great prog.

All help appreciated.
