Q: info from files on network drives
« on: October 14, 2003, 10:17:33 am »

I've noticed that one of the new features of the newer versions of MC is that upon displaying any entries in the media library, it checks to see if the song exists, checks its id tag and displays a corresponding icon next to it.

The problem I'm having is that all my files are on a network drive, and therefore there's a bit of lag when checking to see if the file exists. This means that when I click on any part within the tree, it can take upwards of 10 seconds before MC stops working and I can scroll through the library, at which point there's another delay.

Is there any way to make it just display from the database, and not consult the files each time? MJ seemed a lot faster - I'd rather get an error message saying the file isn't there than have to wait so long each time.

Otherwise, thanks for a great program.

What version are you using?  9.1.275 is available in a thread here.

Why not run Media Server on the machine where the files are?

I have a linux machine running as a file server. I use samba to make the files available to my laptop, where I'm running XP. MC, unfortunately, checks each file on the other computer each time it displays the file, which causes a serious slowdown in searching through the database. My question is, is there a way to make it not check the files each time, and just rely on the database information so that everything can be displayed a lot quicker?

I have the same problem - views with 4 panes and thumbnail album groups are slow to navigate. I experimented with 2000 local files vs. 2000 network share files and the network view was 50% slower (9 secs vs 3) to display.

Shouldn't be a LAN issue as its 100Mb
The CPU only went to 65% and there's tons of free RAM

Are you guys SURE that your Linux machines are running 100Mb??

I know I've had wierd problems with auto-negotiate on Linux. I usually end up hard setting the NIC to 100Mb/Full Duplex using the conf.modules/modules.conf file.

Either way, reading a directory with 2000 files in it is bound to be a lot slower over a LAN link than from a local drive.

That's why I'm using New Improved Juicy Sexy Media Server(tm) from JRiver!

Oy. Is there a way to disable the checking of files while searching? Before connecting the network drive I tried searching through the database, and it took less than a second to display all the files. My files do not change unless MC has edited them - there's therefore no reason for the program to waste time while doing searches. I'd prefer the program display matches instantaneously, and then when I want to play the files, then check to see if they're there.

Is this possible? If not, can it be?

Yes, you're right, MJ8 did work that way.

Is this impossible in MC9?
