Cheers, guys, and thank you for adding support for AAC playback and tagging. Do you also plan on adding an AAC encoder? It would be most appreciated; I'm very excited to try this format out!

Amen to that. Put the nail in the coffin for Itunes for me....

The AAC encoder would be nice (I seriously doubt I'd rerip what I've already done, unless space becomes an issue); I HATE what Itunes does with tags, and I won't rip to AAC period unless MC9 provides an encoder....I'm all over the Itunes music store though, I have to admit, it's pretty cool--not necessarily a bargain, and it's a bit funky to navigate until you get the hang of browsing, but it's a lot of fun to poke around in there.

An encoder would be cool. I guess that I could always link to an external encoder.

Does the AAC playback support files bought from the iTunes store yet?

AAC file from iTunes plays for me in MC9.1.283

I ripped a song to AAC in iTunes on another system but it won't play in MC 283. I changed the "media type" tag to audio, and it's an m4a file, but nothing happens when I try to play it -- the play bar doesn't advance and I hear nothing. (I do get the "play" icon next to the file, however.)

Thanks for any help with this. I'm using W2K.

Hmmm....I've had no problems playing AAC from the Itunes music store--even before I switched the file type from video to audio. What I can't do is get them to my ipod--can't wait to try todays build though; hopefully that will fix it.

Where'd you switch this?

Right now, they are working, but are in video mode.

Found it. Just one of the tags for the file that lets you select Audio or Video. CHanged it to audio. Now it looks like a regular file.

No tag info came in. Are other people having this problem?

My .m4p files don't get any tag info in Media Center either.

Build 285 doens't allow the playing of the iTunes song on the iPod, at least not for me

So, where can I grab a few sample AAC files to test with .. without having to go to ITunes, get software, buy songs, etc ....

Just pop a CD into iTunes and rip one. That's what I did for testing. Seemed the easiest way.

You could probably find an external AAC encoder and just re-encode a mp3 to aac.

I don't know of any AAC files available on the web... mainly because I haven't looked.

also, just a note about hte file tags... I'm sure that they are being worked on, and I am just really glad to be able to play AAC files. I just wanted to let the powers that be know about it.

and AAC files that you encode yourself won't have the DRM so they'll react differently with the iPod...

Yeah... I plan on buying one iTMS song to try that out at some point.

I updated to the newest version of Quicktime and AAC files now play in MC.

Aye, I'm hoping for an encoder, just like the current MP3 or OGG encoders, so I can drop my CDs in, fire up MC9, and turn out non-drm'd, perfectly iPoddable, petite lil' AAC files.

I'll download and install the newest Quicktime if that'll help, no problemo. Just make that dropdown have AAC in it. Woot!

For those of you that have QT Pro installed, you can batch encode files using Qutibacoas from this page:

Qutibacoas looks to be quite handy, the only thing it seems to be lacking is the ability to pass in Tags for the files.

I did a bit of testing. I appear to be able to tag the AAC files with MC, however, that tag information does not make it into iTunes. Similarly, tags from iTunes don't make it into MC. I wonder what's different about the tags.

I'm playing with it now. I'm getting some errors from the QuickTime side of things. And it's locked up a few times =o(

When using an external encoder to transcode files from MC, does it do the decoding to WAV file? I'm going to have to figure out where exactly that file is placed. (At the moment, I'm guessing that it's in the Temp File Location from the options section. I'll try that out when I get back.)
