Media Server Problem
« on: November 14, 2003, 06:18:11 pm »

I didn't conduct a search for this in other threads because I'm lazy, so if there is a thread that already addresses this, facilitate my laziness by providing me with a thread link.  Otherwise, here's the problem:

When streaming .mp3s from my home server via Media Server to my PC at work, I occassionally (often enough) have the problem where MC on my PC at work skips through several files (when playing, say, an album's worth of songs), and then finally tells me that there was an error trying to stream the files and that I should verify that the file's location is correct.  The error doesn't occur on all the songs on the album, just some.  And, when I get home to verify that the file in MC is correctly pointing to the physical file (you know, that the file hasn't been moved or deleted or renamed without updating the MC library), everything is correct, so the error message is incorrect.

Any idea what would cause this error message to appear?

Thanks in advance,

Wobbley

I have this problem too.  Very frustrating

Server running 9.1.305, client running 9.1.304.

Other clients running earlier versions work fine.

Any idea?

I'm with you on this one!!!  I use MS at home from work and get the same error.  I KNOW that the files have not moved since last week, so that's not the issue.

Please Matt/Jim/Anybody, any explanation or solution for this problem?

I run my fraternity house's audio system off MC server and client, including several brothers' rooms, plus different zones in the basement, common area, foyer, and outside.

The masses are beginning to get restless; this problem did not exist in the builds before 9.1.3xx.

Client and server must be the same version.

What type of files do you have trouble with?  Do they play on the server?

JimH,

I've installed the latest version (9.1.305) on both the server and the client.  The files are of type .mp3 and they play fine on the server.  To ensure I've been clear, let me explain again.  Let's say I'm at work (client) and I'm connected to my Media Server at home. I select an album from the view scheme called "Global Underground Afterhours", which has about 31 tracks (multiple artists).  I double click the first track on the album, and MC immediately skips it, and the next track, and then begins playing track 3.  When track 3 ends and MC tries to start playing track 4, it skips track 4, 5 and when it gets to track 6, a dialog box pops up and tells me (I can't remember the exact message) that there's something wrong with the file I'm trying to play.  Now, I am very meticulous, so I know that there's nothing wrong with the file(s) that won't play, but I get home and check them just to be sure.  Sure enough, there's nothing wrong with them, and they play fine on the server.  I should note that this happens with several albums that try to play, regardless of whether or not the albums are multiple artists or not, and regardless of the length of the physical file name (I thought this might be an issue, just guessing, but it doesn't seem to be).

Thanks for your attention.

Hi All,

I cannot play mp3's at home either. There have been no changes to media server in a few builds, so something sneaked out unexpectedly or something in the client is broke. I'll check it on monday. Hopefully a fix will be in the next build.

Wobbley: is the behavior consistent? I mean: try to play an album and note which tracks fail. Try to play some other stuff, and then try to play the album again.  Do the same tracks work as before? And the same tracks fail as before?

Now .305 on both systems; like the others, find the server fine, but errors on playback with many files.

Trying to play one of the files results in "waiting..." being displayed for a split-second in the title/time-remaining area, then it goes on to the next track, and does the same thing.  If it can't play a third file consecutively, it displays the "Media Center has encountered errors trying to play back the last several files.  Please make sure the library points to the correct location and try again" error, totally stopping playback.

Files play fine locally on the server machine.

The behavior is consistent.  On a given album, 3-4 songs will play, the rest will be skipped through.  Closing Media Center, and even rebooting the server, and trying again, results in the same songs playing and the same not playing.

Thanks so much for the attention and help!  hope to get the problem resolved soon.

Another update:

A client running version 9.1.289 connects to the server (running .305) and plays all files fine.  No problem whatsoever like the clients running .305.

Hope this helps.

I too have this issue.  Client and Server running 305.  Some files play fine, others are skipped.  This only occurs when streaming to a remote client.  Local playback on the server machine is fine.

Success!

Updating client to .306 solves the problem.

Thanks for being the most responsive software company I deal with!
