Sawdust Gets In Your Eyes
« on: December 07, 2002, 02:02:08 pm »

Before Thanksgiving I took my wimpy chainsaw in and traded for a Husqvarna that has some guts.  Now I'm annoying the neighborhood on weekends, sawing up downed wood that seems dry enough, and piling it in the garage.

Last week, I took down an old apple tree and sawed it into logs and chunks.  Part of it was rotten and coming apart a little so I left some for the woodpeckers.

Tonight I'm burning that apple wood.  It has a nice sweet smell.

The juniper in the back yard had some limbs that came down last winter when we had an ice storm.  Those are now in pieces in the garage.  When you split one open, it's the color of a red raspberry.  It catches fire and burns with a lot of flame.

The smell of gas on my fingers tonight goes well with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Give yourself a treat. Save a few of the smaller chunks of apple for the B.B.Q. Wonderful with anything you grill on it.

Did you get the one with the magnesium crank case?

really after what 4 days or so there are still people without power here in NC after the ICE storm, and they say some will not get power untill Wensday.

>> Sauvignon Blanc
Can't deal with it. I tried, really i Did. It's too dry for me.

I did see them make Ice Wine the other day but $100 per bottle i think i will need to pass on it. i am thinking about getting a wine kit (Delux version under $200)

OK, when you grill next summer in Willmar, I'll bring the apple wood.

For other people here, Mike and Theresa just bought a house west of Minneapolis in a small town.  It looks like a really nice place:

They're moving three weeks from now if you have a pickup.

90' ?

Sounds like a baby. When I was down there 6 months ago, the lodgepole pines looked like they were around 200' (on average).

NC is pretty cool. Thinking about moving down there someday. We went out to the Outer Banks and stayed on Ocracoke Island for 3 to 4 days. Drove right out onto the beach on the Atlantic side. The ocean is so beautiful. Ate well...hit every seafood joint there. The mosquitos there (and on the mainland) are nearly as big as the trees (and more numerous). I'll be going down there again in '03.

For you ,this small town is better than the old one concerning the places you go to work?
Are you more in a kind of central place?
And would not have to spend as much in the car that working ?

Concerning the house ,here a tip .
If you want to feel the place is ever bigger and get more light.
Strip all the wood and put clear varnish on it.
First try to find out the stuff who is on the wood .
If it is a kind od 'varnish/paint' ,in this case just sand the wood  with a vey soft sand paper.
After that put the same kind of stuff ,but in a light color.
Not only you would get 'more place and light' ,but if you have old furnitures in dark wood ,it would  give them 'a new life'.
Because of all the wood in the house with a light color, the furnitures will shine ,more than if all in dark color.

Just my opinion, but -i really think it - a very advised one....

Me too. Grand Rapids.

zevele,

At this point we are going to give ourselves about a year and then see what we think. Typical of this style of house, the woodwork is dark throughout. My first target would probably be the kitchen. Some of the upper cabinets are unreachable without a ladder.

I just had another look .
The house is in wood ,not stones?

In this case ,if you want to change it ,it is easier.
Sand it ,put a anti fire product and just paint it.
Not bad to give a try first.
Like it you can find what you want really and make a planning about money to spend .
The minus : it is more messy when you live in the place.
I love the dinner room .
Do not know why but to me there is a Faulkner  novel flavor in it.
I may stop by to have a smoked deep fry tirkey one day...
Have a nice day off

well most homes in the usa are made from wood. some newer homes use stucco and they all have problems with roting wood since the stucco is layed over wood and it traps moisture.

I have seen many stucco homes where after 5 years the walls rot out due to moisture problems. and once you get termites in there you can't get them out.

Not sure about termites. Too cold up here for them. Sissy bugs.

Anyway, being a construction kind of guy I get to see a lot of techniques for exterior finishes. Modern stucco is very rot resistant if done correctly. Granted, it takes a little integrity on the installers behalf to make sure this is done. EIFS, a synthetic type of stucco, is impervious to just about anything you can throw at it. And it comes in many colors. Best Buy had this done to some of the penthouses and entrances. Very sharp.

>> Not sure about termites. Too cold up
>> here for them. Sissy bugs.
well they are up there just not as many

the only state that does not have termites is Alaska. it is due to the Freeze it kills most of them off if they do get started. the collony needs to be below the freeze line or they will die.

>> if done correctly
The stucco your so right about that and i think some have learned from the mistake but it cost the home owners and stucco companies big bucks and some of the builders will not touch stucco again.

one other thing to stay away from is the Molded foundation system. this is nothing more than foam and you pour cement into it. termites get into this and make tunnels. in recent years companies have been putting pesticides in the foam to keep termites out. most termite companies will not touch this kind of foundation system.
