I'm curious to know what hardware you actually use to listen to the tunes. Do you use computer speakers? Do you use hi-fi speakers and an amp? Do you use the speakers for a surround sound system?

Currently I have my HTPC connected to a large screen in the living room, and I use the speakers from the home theater for music playback. All audio sources play through the PC (and then the HT amp), and eventually video as well.

Could you edit the options abit.

'Computer Speakers' is tooo wide a range.

It goes from $10 double speaker setup that is good for hearing the beeps ur system makes in errors up to $500 5.1 surround sound systems with bass boxes that can shake the house down.

Just saying 'computer speakers' doesn't really give much of a feel for what people are using.

I personally use some £60 logitech 5.1 speakers but have just ordered some £200 5.1 speakers with a dolby pro logic 2 hardware decoder for my uncle's home HTPC system - both are computer speakers but theres a BIG difference between them.

Agree with Nila. (Shock Horror!!) I use "computer speakers" but they are Cambridge Soundworks 4.1s with a very nice sub that actaully sound a lot better than my stereo speakers...

I have a Boston 5.1 Suround Sound System (5 Speakers, 1 Woofer I use As A Foot Rest), It May Be Computer Speakers But It Cost a Boat Load (More That Most Stereo Systems).

Glad it's not just me King, my sub makes a PERFECT footrest too.
I miss it ALOT when I'm stuck at computers with only two speaker setup's.

For my computerI'm using a pair of Radio Shack pro LX 4 speakers. They have a Kevlar 4" driver and a Linaeum tweeter all hooked up to a Dynaudio 30WPC tube amp and Onkyo preamp. Haven't gone to 5.1 on the computer yet. Home stereo speakers are 3 Radio Shack PRO-X88AV Speaker with the same Linaeum tweeter as the LX 4s and a 5" poly driver. Main speakers are a pair of Magnepan MMG panel speakers.

I say NOT!

I use an Altec Lansing 6.21 powered (150Watts RMS), which sounds so good I sold my stereo.

I also use headphones (AKG K501 or Sennheiser HD540), but with a dedicated headphone amp (5-50,000hz, <0.018 THD)

On my computer at home I have a set of Altec Lansings with a subwoofer that really give great sound.

At work I just have two speakers and, well, I'm not supposed to be so distracted by the music at work, so I think this is for the best.

On my iPod, on the other hand, I have a pair of $270 Etymotic Research headphones that are perhaps some of the best in the world.

That's a Creative/Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 system. Reasonably nice sound for the price.

I have two sound cards, one cheapie for my cheapie computer speakers for all sound from my computer that is not MC generated.

For MC music playback, I have a good digital sound card that has a digital coax output which then runs to the basement, across the house and then up to my audio system's digital input. The main system then feeds a separate amp which then feeds back to the mid-grade audio speakers in my computer room.

Of course, it also feeds my main HT amps and speakers in my living room.

On one of my PC's I have a set of Yamaha 2 satellites+subwoofer, on the other PC, I have a set of Creative 4 satellites+subwoofer. The loungeroom PC connects via SPDIF optical to a Yamaha DD/DTS surround amp, which has Bose 301 Fronts, Bose center channel, a pair of Polk-Audio rears, and a home-made kit subwoofer.

Sounds very phat in the loungeroom!

I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. The sound is cool enough for me, that is, until I get a big LCD, mount it in my living room (oh wait, for that i have to move out of my apartment and get a living room) and then get a good 5.1 system.

But, for now, the Klipsch speakers work great and now my Sony 3-CD changer just sits neglected in my bedroom.

1.Computer System: Logitec 5.1 surround w/subwoofer/footrest. - hardly ever used, use mostly Koss HPs at computer(powered by QUAD 303 & 33).

2.Workshop System: 5.1 Pioneer Reciever w/ 5 very old Dynaco A-25s (w/newer Phillips tweeters - these 30 year old speakers sound sweeter every year)) and a home-built sub, (2-12" woofs w/ 200w Carver Cube). I like to rock when I'm working!

3.HTPC System: Magnapan/Threshold/JBL Subs.

fed by the computer via SB Extigy.

Boston Digital Media Theater speakers (4" fronts, 3" rears and a REALY NICE FOOT REST sub). Fed by Audigy sound card. Sounds great and my Yahama 3090 sits unused because I spend way too much time on the computer.

Maybe somone shoud do a poll on the subwoof/footrest.

I currently have a Chaintech AV710 sound card with ASIO4ALL or ASIOx to get a pure 44.1KHz digital signal out for my audio. This feeds into my DAC.

I also allows me to play DTS and other and it will auto-detect the right frequency for playback.

Currently, Bose AM-15 with a Sony V55ES a/v HT receiver

But that will soon be upgraded to:

Audio Alchemy DAC-in-the-box and a their DTI DDE CD transport
(depending on how this stuff sounds, it may get replaced next year with a Bryston BP-26DA, which has the built-in Crystal DACs)
Carver TFM-45 375w power amplifier (purchased off ebay, until next year when i can afford a new Bryston 4B-SST)
Revel Performa F30 speakers (patiently waiting in the box until my Carver arrives)

Just swapped my BA computer speakers with the following 'junk' from my closet:
Yamaha DSP-A2070 (not Dolby digital capable)
2x BA-7 Bookshelf speakers
1x BA525V center channel (hooked up but not in use yet)
2x BA SubSat6 speakers for the rear (not hooked up yet)

Running everything in 'stereo' mode for now, until I can get the surrounds wired and in place.
The sound difference is night and day (even over the roar of the 3 PCs).
