The debate over "the"
« on: January 28, 2004, 11:53:44 am »

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I've been playing around with iTunes, and I noticed that it automatically IGNORES the word "The" before a band name, so they end up being alphabetized a little more accurately, and without having to use the "name, the" structure.

If iTunes can do this, can Media Jukebox/Center?  This would be a very helpful feature.

Someone pointed out that there is a band called "The The".  Removing "The" would be tough on them.

I seen a speech therapist when I was younger, it seems I had problems with my "S"'s (I still have the problem).

I have been Told If You Studder Put Ear Plugs In And This Helps.

The problem here is you then can't hear your music

Would be interesting if we can get a possibility to ignore other articles than "a", "an" and "the".

This would be very useful (especially for band-names in other languages).

Actually it only ignores the articles when sorting. In the tree, the bands with "The" in the name still come under T. Am I missing something?

why don't you just move "The" to the end?

I have a plug-in that does this.

It looks funny when playing then. Beatles, The indeed :)

Not an MC problem, but it's amusing to note that the iPod (which ignores articles by default) files the band I Am Kloot under A.  Most odd.

That's why I've setup all my files like this:

[ARTIST] = The Beatles
[ALBUM ARTIST] = Beatles, The

This way, I can present any way I want.

True.  ;) But if you turn off "disable articles" it works very nicely. Just create a view sorted by [artist] or [album] depending on how you prefer to see things.

What about French articles such as "La Boutine Souriante"?

That's why I use both [album artist] and [artist fields in this way. There is simply too many different articles in different languages to be able to program them into MC.

BTW: I use the same method to solve the old "FirstName LastName vs. LastName, First Name Debate".

On my system, with 'The' ignored, the bands fall under their respective letters, NOT under 'T'.

I also have a separate field called "sort" so I can sort "The Beatles" under "The Beetles". Works great.

Any other ways other than the one mentioned above to modify either the artist or album artist field to have an artist listed under their LAST name instead of their first? For example, I'd like to be able to see "Elliott Smith" Next to "Patti Smith" next to "The Smithereens" but I don't want so change the tags to that the last name is first as in "Smith, Elliott".
