Error when trying to rip cds.   HELP!
« on: November 25, 2002, 09:40:30 am »

After I click "copy" from the Rip CD tool, I get an Information box that says, "Open drive failed. Parameter is out of range." so I click the okay button and up pops an error box that says "Read track failed. Drive is not open."

Any Ideas?   Thanks.

I have tried various cds, etc. and have not been able to rip anything yet  :-[

Post your sys info from Help>System Info. What version of ASPI are your running? (v4.72 is latest). Are you current on all OS Serv Packs, latest MJ, DirectX (can't hurt), etc.

PS: What other burning software do you have onboard?

You don't have W2k or XP laying around, do you? AThat would solve it. If not do the following....

Backup license...uninstall MJ...uninstall MyCD (but not the HP drivers, of course...see if there is newer drivers for it)...install latest ASPI...reinstall MJ...restore license

Repost sys info from MJ after all of this.

This usually fixes problems with v8. Should help with v9 also.

I will try that, BUT (and forgive me for sounding stupid), what is the "ASPI"?

Thanks.

Uninstalled both, reinstalled MJ 8.0 (not 9) and am having no problem now.  I will upgrade to 9 and see what happens.

Same problem happened once I upgraded to 9.0, so I guess I will go back down to 8.  I didn't have MP3 as a convert option on 8, however, and the patch wouldn't load for it.  Any suggestions there?

I don't have a problem with it.

If you'll be patient, we'll probably get it running.  Try 9.0.83, just out a few hours ago.

Then switch playback from digital to analog in the CD settings in MJ.

There some other things you can try, but that's a start.  There's more in the FAQ.

I just upgraded to 9.0.83 as recommended and CD ripping seems to work fine now (though only @ 2/3 the speed of 8.0).  I had exactly the same problem as KVRDave - and I'm also on Win 98.

I have to make an editorial comment here.  I really wish J River would reconsider their current program of blackmailing their paying customers into getting beta versions (upgrade by 12/1 or face an upgrade charge!) that have lots of bugs.  Forcing the user to go through hoops like "Backup license...uninstall MJ...uninstall MyCD (but not the HP drivers, of course...see if there is newer drivers for it)...install latest ASPI...reinstall MJ...restore license" seems like busy-work.  I went through the whole ASPI re-install excercise when I first bought MJ, and it didn't solve the problem.  An MJ bug fix did.  Meanwhile I wasted hours going through hoops to compensate for a bug.  When you put a beta version out there you can't then assume problems are due to the user.  Fix the bugs - then you can start looking at PICNIC issues.  I've enjoyed using MJ, but after the last 3 "upgrades" where I've lost functionality(sometimes just a day or two - othertimes a week or more) while a new version is spun -- it gets frustrating and certainly makes the competition look more attractive.  Some folks on this board have been very helpful - I just think beta testers should be volunteers, not general users who are just trying to make their $ investment last longer than a couple of months.

Thanks for letting me express my opinion - and thanks for the fix in 9.0.83.

I never said you had to. I just thought you were bored and wanted to do something fun.

Your ASPI was out of date

Look at it this way...you have a v9 license (and you saved some dough by doing it now - hardly "blackmail"). You can roll back to v8 until v9 is more "user friendly". V9 licenses work on v8. I'm sure you read the v9 disclaimer and it DOES have Alpha/Beta stamped on it. Personally I don't have a problem with the way JRiver is doing things.

Download the latest MJ 9 like EconMDB did. It should fix your problem.
