Media Server and Unicode File Names
« on: February 29, 2004, 11:55:25 pm »

Is it just me or is Media Server unable to stream files with unicode names or regular files in unicode-named directories?

What version of MC are you using?  Unicode was added and then perfected over many versions.  If not the latest, can you try updating?

Media Center 9.1.316

I have no issues with non-Unicode file names.

Media Center 9.1.316

the current version of mc is 10.0.81

there has been about 81 newer versions of MC since the version you have.

My bad... I thought he meant latest for version 9. I'll give 10 a shot.

Well, I tried 10.0.81. Same client/server error messages. Guess they missed one in their 81 versions since 9.1.

All the folder names and files names are fully qualified from the root dir.

I'm using 9.1.317 and I have the same issue.  Files with non-Western unicode characters don't play at all.

Exactly the problem. Guess I'm not the only one after all.

I've got the Asian language pack installed for Windows XP. No problems with Asian unicode in file names and tags within the database and for stand alone playback.

However, the media server is unable to stream the Asian unicode filenames. But, the client retrieves the Asian unicode metadata just fine...

I wanted to escalate the issue, but I frankly don't care that much.

The unicode stuff I've tested works fine. Could you post a filename here?

Here is a sample file name...

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Music\Korean\비 2집\비 2집 - 10 아쉬운 빈 공간.ogg

It looks like this forum doesn't support Asian unicode, considering the above line looks like gibberish.

Created a Yahoo mail account.
username: unicodemediaserver@yahoo.com
password: jriver

Email in that account includes a sample filename.
Choose Korean encoding.

Another example, if you have a Unicode font installed, type the following in MS Word where [Alt-x] is means press Alt-x

U+4E00[Alt-x]
U+4E8C[Alt-x]
U+4E09[Alt-x]

You should see 1 horizontal line, 2 horizontal lines, and 3 horizontal lines respectively.  Once you rename your file to that, it won't play any more.
