Crash with drag-and-drop
« on: March 09, 2004, 11:44:33 am »

Hello,

I ripped all my cd's into one directory [on my harddisk]: e:\mycds and now, after correcting several issues with MC, I want to split my mp3 to seperated directories (e.g. e:\final\cd001, e:\final\cd002 etc.).
I select the files in MC (select all the files which belong to the same album) and move them (via drag and drop) to the final-directories.
After every 10-15 drag-and-drops, MC crashes. Error-details: media jukebox.exe AppVer: 10.0.85.0 ModName: jrimage.dll ModVer: 1.2.47.0 Offset: 000038d9.

Thanks,
RIen

Can anyone else reproduce this?

A JRImage crash means it's drawing related.  Does it matter what's visible, if the tree is scrolled, etc.?  Do different skins make a difference?

Thanks for any help.

I use the skin 'Z'. I will try another skin to see if it's skin-related.

When is the crash:

  • when grabbing
  • when dragging around
  • when letting go

The crash follows after the mouse-button is released. The files were moved into the destination-directory. Then the crash follows.

Some builts ago, MC crashes when renaming Mp3 files in different folders at the same time. But i don't remember the error code.
Even MC seems to be instable in other situations too, i reinstalled MC and all was fine (concerning MC).
Just try this...

What happens if you navigate to the same folder(s) and then hit F5 a bunch of times instead of dragging?

I'm wondering if it's something to do with the drop or something to do with rebuilding the tree.

Thanks.

Matt,

I think it has something to do with the drop. I could press F5 many times without a problem; after a couple of drops this time it crashed without a messagebox, just a boom! and gone!

I'm sorry,

I can't find any logic.

Now it crashed after 1 time F5;
after a restart I could do more than 50 drops without a crash!

Perhaps it's the combination of pressing F5 and the drops?

I'm guessing it's crashing when we're enumerating what items to show in the "Drives & Devices" portion of the tree.  Since F5 crashed, it probably doesn't have anything to do with the drag-n-drop.

Do you have any unique devices, virtual drives, handhelds, etc. connected that are showing up under "Drives & Devices"?

If so, can you disconnect them and see if it makes a difference?

Thanks.

Matt,

The only "special" drives I have, are from my (built-in) cardreader. My IPOD isn't connected.
If I knew how to attach a picture, I could make a screendump of (a part of) MC.

I have been having the same problem ever since I began using MC10, all versions....been living with it until now but it's getting old. Here's what happens: I open a file on my hard drive (C)....select anywhere from 5 to 100 mp3 files....drag and drop them in another file on (C).....poof, MC crashes every time with a media core error message sometimes, sometimes with no message. Upon re-opening MC and navigating to the file where the mp3's were dropped, there are usually there...95 percent of the time anyway. Everything else works fine.
System:
Win XP home
Athalon 1.1 G processor
1 G RAM
240 G on 2 hard drives

Thanks for any insights!

I did an experience:

(it took me hours and hours and hours......)
I had to drag and drop the contents of about 600(!) cd's (>10.000 mp3's). I did it with MC:
63 crashes - so 63 times to start MC; 63 times it has to read my source-directory (which takes a long time with 10.000 mp3's!)

Then, I took my (forgotten) utility Tag&Rename 3.06. I did the same job (pffffft....) and guess what?? Not 1 crash!

So, I'm sorry, but I believe that it's a (serious!) problem with MC!

Kind regards,

Can you see if you have anything else in common?  Third party plug-ins for MC, programs running in the background...mouse drivers .... video cards, etc.?

I have no plugins for MC; the only background programs I'm running is "popupkiller". I have a desktop set from Logitech with Logitech drivers. My graphics card is an ATI Radion 9800.

No plugins here either, but I also am using a card reader....SanDisk 6-in-1 ImageMate, external connected by USB through a hub. Microsoft  corded mouse and keyboard using XP std drivers, Wacom USB 9x12 graphics tablet, 2nd gen iPod. Video is nVidia MX440 64mb. AVG 6.0 anti-virus is running all the time. I'm sharing a broadband connection with a laptop through a Belkin ethernet router but no file or device sharing. The crashes occur after releasing the mouse button after dropping the files.....2 to 10 second pause with hourglass cursor...then poof.

Rein...any progress on troubleshooting this problem? I have tried disconnecting the card reader with no change. Also, I have now expreienced the crash when using copy/paste as well as drag and drop. It goes like this: Highlight 12 mp3 files....click copy in Edit dropdown, navigate to a different folder, highlight folder, click paste in Edit, MC crashes. Upon reopening MC, I find that the files have been cut and pasted to their new location rather than copied there. This is giving me a headache! Do you know if it is  advisable just to use WindowsExplorer to manage files? It seem that I remember reading that it is best to use MC for this...ha! Any administrators out there care to ring in on this, or are we on our own?

We haven't been able to reproduce this on our machines.

Try to isolate what you're looking at, or how deep you are in the tree.

Also, see if F5 instead of drag-n-drop will crash.  It sounds like it's crashing while rebuilding the tree, not during the actual file move or db update.

Thanks for any help.

yes...f5 will make it crash, but only if I'm down to the level of my Music folder. The Path: Drives and Devices\My Computer\C\Music\. From this deep in the tree hitting f5 will cause a crash even if no changes have been made in the file structure. Also have found that just navigating to this point (Music folder) will occasionally (perhaps 10% of the time) cause a crash as the next level of folders attempts to display. There are about 300 folders in C\Music. Until this is resolved, are there any drawbacks to using windows explorer to manage my mp3 folders?

Thanks for the reply, RW

We'll test some more tomorrow.  If we can't make it crash, would you (or someone else with the crash) be available for testing a special build?

Also, the advantage to managing your music from inside of MC is that it'll always keep the library updated, so you won't have any broken links.

Thanks.

Try doing it in 'Safe Mode'. If it works, then you have the same problem I do because I still can't get MC to import jack with my database. Plus I can always tell when MC is about to crash...be it with Importing, 'My Computer', or Drag n Drop.

Goose/Matt,

I'm sorry, but I am finished with my job! (splitting about 10.000 mp3's into individual CD's - wicht means: putting them in seperate folders).

I was getting crazy of MC: After every 8-10 drops MC crashed. Sometimes with, and sometimes without a messagebox.
I took another tool (Tag&Rename) to select the mp's which belong to the same CD and dragged en dropped them (what means: move the files to another folder) to the destination folder. Tag&Rename didn't crash at all!

Another strange thing is that MC spends much time for "gathering" after a drag and drop. It took many seconds (even on my 3.0 Ghz Pentium IV) to re-read the source-directory. Tag&Rename did this job without a delay.

Sp please Matt, take a look at Tag&Rename and see if you can implement the same very-fast re-gathering of the source-directory after a drag-and-drop.

Perhaps MC can get the best of both worlds....
I find MC (till so far) the best jukebox for playing my audio.....

Thank you,

Rien

Matt, I read this thread and couldn't help but try to crash MC myself :)

The problem does seem to be when it's rebuilding the tree.
I can hold down F5 for a signinficant amount of time when I'm only a couple of levels deep, but once I get down to Drives and Devices->My Computer->D:->Music it will crash when I hold down F5 for about 10 seconds.  It also happens on any subfolder of D: with a significant amount of subfolders or files. For instance, I can make it crash when the subfolder I'm viewing has seven empty child folders, but not when it has only a couple... maybe it just takes a whole lot longer.

Scott.

I must be the world's best procrastinator. I've got an essay on AI due soon and I'm sitting here holding down F5 trying to make MC crash...

Ah, holding F5 down was the key.

We're still investigating, but look for a fix in a coming build.

Thanks everyone.
