Install problem FIXED
« on: April 06, 2004, 08:27:05 am »

CRASH
My first ever fail to install...
In "Installing Media Centre Program Files..." the progress bar stops about 2 fifths of the way along, there is a burst of disc activity and it locks-up. Need ctrl/alt/del to get out.

Tried lots of restarts (yawn) and reinstalling 107, 104 and 91. Tried uninstalling - fails - locks-up at about 3 fifths of the progress bar.

Tried running media centre (was v10.0.104) - get "failed to load skin 'thunderstorm' reverting to default skin" then "failed to load default skin" and fails to run.

OS is W98SE (can't run MC)

Summary: Install, Uninstall and MC all fail...

Am I doomed?

Pat.

You're probably out of Windows temp file space.  It's a Windows bug.

Run IE and do tools/Internet options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete files.

No joy.
Tried that and emptying the Windows\TEMP
Made 1Gb space on C:
Reinstalled video adapter drivers and DirectX
Still no MC or Install or Uninstall
Keep 'em coming!

Try renaming the .jmd files in the Program files/JRiver/Media Center/Data directory.  They are your database files.

But you may have something more going on.  Disk problems?

Me again!
When the installer locks up I can still use the computer.
My Sysinternal's Process Explorer program tells me that the installer is (when locked-up) using about 90% of the CPU.
It also highlights these files:
JRImage.dll
MJVideoDecoder.ax
And states "Highlight Relocated DLLs entry in the View menu. Any DLLs that are not loaded at their programmed base address show in yellow. DLLs that cannot load at their base address because other files are already mapped there are relocated by the loader, which consumes CPU and makes parts of the DLL that are modified as part of the relocation un-sharable"
Which I don't really understand! But since the VideoDecoder has just been changed....?
Pat.
PS I'll have a bash at the database files later.

I had the same problem on a win98se machine installing 10.07 after uninstalling the previous version - lockup about 1/2 way through file copy process.  I installed to a different location with no problem.  Now I'm reimporting my music files and updating the database from tags.

Have the same problem with Win98SE.  I uninstalled Media Center and deleted all registry entries.  Installed with no problems, but then when I tried to uninstall the latest version, the uninstaller locked up halfway.

SUCCESS !!!
I waited for 108 but that did not install either so I was forced to improvise!
Using your ideas (above) I was really keen to lose as little customisation as possible, so I:

1. Removed all files and folders from the Media Centre folder (Saved them just in case...) One file claimed to be in use so I remamed it in DOS. Except...
2. Left the whole Data folder in there (But copied it j-i-c... )
3. Uninstalled MC (it worked now !) removing the registry files but not library files. (maybe you don't need to remove reg files...?)
4. Installed MC108 (Custom) ... IT WORKED!
5. Peered inside... EVERYTHING STILL THERE!
6. Had to reset Options (probably a good thing as they had altered a littlesince I last looked) but not custom fields. Not too onerous.
7. Had a little play with my portraits on Picture Terrain - seems to make me look even more handsome!
8. Mused a little on the hardships of being a neglected W98SE owner (Just kidding !)
9. Had a sudden thought: is it just that "MJVideoDecoder.ax" file in the TV folder that blocks the over-install as it does not have its archive attribute set while the rest do? Would just removing that one file allow you to over-install? Hmmm...

I've been having this problem in Win98se also. There's no need to uninstall and delete registry entries. Just rename the Media Center folder to something like Media Center.old. Then install the new version and copy the Data folder from the previous installation into the folder of the new installation (and also any plugins, skins, etc). As far as I can tell, everything works fine this way and you don't lose any of your settings because you haven't deleted any registry entries.
