I have Media Server running on my desktop, but whenever I try to access it from my laptop, I get the message:

Failed to connect to a server

Reason unknown:
URL://(correct info)/GetLibrary

I am running 10.0.118 on both machines. The laptop is accessing the desktop just fine, via a Linksys wireless router.

I'm not even sure where to look for what the problem might be.

Can anyone help?

FIrewall?

Are you entering the address by hand or using the "search for media server"?

I'm doing the "search for media server" and the address it returns is the correct one (the same as actually on the Media Server).  I'm using port 8787 specifically.

I don't have the desktop firewalled, but the router is, whatever it's built-in firewall is.

But the laptop can get to everything just fine. Unless this is something with how Media Server operates specifically.

Is port 8787 open everywhere?

I'm not sure I know the answer to your question, but here is what I do know.

All I did was tell media server to use 8787.

In the router setup, I have Firewall enabled and I have Block Anonymous Internet Requests checked and Filter Internet NAT redirection checked. Under Applications in the router config, I tried to put in Port Range Forward for Media server (from Port 8787 to Port 8787, both TCP and UDP). However, in this config the IP is 192.168.1.1:8787 and in Media Server it is 192.168.0.1:8787. That seems fishy, but I'm not sure where I'd change that.

Sounds like your firewall. Spend some time playing with it, correct the addresses. If you can find where it logs filtered packets, you should see the Media Server packets being filtered.

well! I figured it out. The lesson is, never let WinXP set something up automatically. Sheesh.

So, at some time, I did the "set up home network" wizard in WinXP and it created a "Network Bridge" (whatever that is). At the time it didn't seem to affect anything so I didn't worry about it. But that's where the problem was. When I deleted that, then the desktop had the right IP, so did Media Server and everything is now hunky dorey!
