AIF's play as noise
« on: April 26, 2004, 12:31:45 pm »

I've been given some files with no extensions - gspot says they're AIFF's.

I've added the extensions as MC didn't see them without the .aif (when i right click>replace&play).

media player and zoom player both play them regardless of extension.

Please can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong, as there are some good tunes there!

Cheers

AIFF format was developed by Apple. AIFF is one of the audio formats used on Macintosh computers, and it is also used by SGI workstations.

It's an uncompressed format. (There is also a compressed variation called AIFC or AIFF-C.)

Here is an old freeware utility for converting AIFF to WAVE: http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Aiff_To_Wave/.
And instructions for it:
http://portal.unesco.org/culture/en/file_download.php/b3282735ebfbf742e8992e2924542725ConvertersENG.fm.pdf

I don't know how well it works.

I was told it was a mac thing. I thought as MC10 said it was suported that it should work in MC !

cheers for the util though, it works fine, but i've over 100 to do. I want MC to play them anyway, it says it should.

(Someone else has reported the same thing in earlier additions, i missed their post to reply to...oops)

Maybe they are in that compressed "C" format. I don't know if it's supported. It can also be a header thing. Maybe MC simply doesn't recognize them correctly. I think that JRiver folks could ask you to send a sample.

Do you have Apple Quick Time installed? Maybe that installs some codecs for AIFF. Just a thought.

On the other hand, in my opinion over a hundred is not so many. If you convert those files to wave then you can compress them to APE, MP3 or what ever you like in MC.

JimH & Co, can you tell anything about AIFF support in MC. I am curious.
