2/3 - 3/4 of my 11,000 or so files are rated 3 stars or more.  That said, in my head 3 stars = good, and 2 stars = OK or average.  I use one star for anything I have that I think is crap, and I don't bother with degrees of crapness!!

Approx 70,000.  Stored currently on 2x 120Gb, 4x 160GB and a 180Gb.

Backed up to 2 external Maxtor 250Gb Firewire drives.  (Well nearly!!!!).  I do archive some to DVD as well.  Need to get another external to complete the backup.

That sounds about right.. i'm looking at 20%@2 stars, 60%@3stars and 20%@4 stars & above, still 30% left to rate.

3 stars = ok
4 stars = good
5 stars = exceptional

i like to keep albums intact, unless they fall above 50%@2 stars, in which case i just keep the good tracks and relegate the incomplete album to my Various folder.

I don't buy CD's I don't like.  But, if I buy a CD that I decide later I don't like, I certainly don't rip it, or if I already ripped it, I delete it.

That said, I have a slightly different rating scheme than most probably do...

5 stars is reserved for the best of the best
4 stars is excellent
3 stars is very good
2 stars is good
1 star is fair (I currently do not have any items with 1 star)

If I ever decide any album deserves lower than a "fair" rating, it will be deleted.

I toyed around with the ratings for a long time, wondering why anyone would have something in their collection with only 1 or 2 stars.  That's when I decided that a new scheme would be helpful.

40 GB (19.1 days of music, 638 albums) and counting...

All MP3 VBR with Fraunhofer encoding at 95-100% or LAME --alt-preset-standard -q0 -V1 (an average of approximately 210 kbit/s). I was using MusicMatch Jukebox to rip and encode originally, but have since switched to MC and LAME - the quality of the encoding is the same to my ears in a double-blind (double-deaf? ) test, and the size is also approximately the same, but there are less problems with the LAME encoder when tagging tracks that don't start with silence (MMJB with Fraunhofer mp3 encoder sometimes creates a small "plop" sound at the beginning of such tracks when adding a tag).

I use Rating 1 for tracks I'm planning to delete, I use Rating 2 for tracks that I'm keeping but that I only play in context with the whole album (e.g. small intro tracks). Rating 3 is the lowest rating I like to play randomly, but I usually equate an unspecified rating with rating 3. Rating 4 is for my favourite tracks (approximately 10% of all tracks). Rating 5 is for the top favourites, which is only about 0.75% of all tracks.

I haven't gotten around to sorting out all the Genre tags. I usually use Random Sort/ 4,5 rating for Jukebox play, or I play whole albums. I periodically  switch some of the #4 rated & #? rated to keep the "jukebox" fresh.

i used to use a system very similar to modelmakers, but eventually ditched it in favor of using genres and a quality measurement rating system...

currently:

5* - wish there was a 6* category
4* - foot tapping-ly good
3* - minimum quality for visitors
2* - i want to keep it for myself
1* - prepare to be deleted!

periodically i delete the 1*'s.

storage = 400 gig hdd; mirrored to a 250 and a 120 - all external firewires

I'm working on getting the FLAC and SHN to APE first, then I'll start on the WAV -> APE.

Unfortunately my collection grows by anywhere from 0-200 tracks per month right now so I need to get those WAVs into APE sooner rather than later.  The volume is at max size of 2TB (I've got another 1TB volume that is almost full of other material) and I'm not ready to expand yet.

Not sure, really, since my ripping/tagging process is still in an early stage.  I refuse to go lossy with CDs, and I have about 350 of them, many of which are classical/sacred and the CDs are full to the brim with data.  I also have about 20 (IIRC) .shn Grateful Dead and Phish concerts which take up more room than they should, but .shn is the format of the "tape"-trading community so I leave them that way.

Anyway, when all is said and done I will probably have about 200 GB, give or take.

I still can't figure out why this is the case, unless it is just "tradition".  I have a few concerts as well, but I always convert them to APE.  I suppose if someone ever requested them from me, I could convert back to SHN (but I'd resist ).

I just updates tags on about 20,000 selections. It took a little over 24 hours. :-(

I've been contemplating two systems, one at home and the other at work, with RAID 5 on each, and then doing mirroring.  My work's bandwidth isn't metered, so as long as I do it late at night, syncing shouldn't be too much of a problem.  I guess I'll just use 2 Linux boxes as file servers.  

I've been trying to think of other ways of doing it, but the data is so large and the changes aren't that frequent, so duplicate HDs seem to be a reasonable way to go.

Love to hear others thoughts.

How they got there (the ogg's)...

EAC>Flac>OggDropXPd***. Flacs are copied twice (1st copy verified) to DVD+RW's (on different brands...Imation & Fuji to date) using RecordNowMax then deleted off the system. Burning to DVD (~4.3 GB of flacs per disk) takes about 40/25 mins verified/non-verified.

***Works great on a LAN. Had 3 machines rippin & 'Droppin a couple weeks ago. Made short work of 50 CD's or so.

im using AMG to find album covers... works pretty fast when copying and pasting between mc 10 and the website. Would like to hear if anybody knows of other sites where i may find album covers as AMG doesnt have em all.?

I have been using MC to rip cd... but with very poor results. The database comes up blank on most cd's. I have been using Windown Media Player to rip as it is much better at finding them.

Anybody know of a tagging software that can find both track names and album covers in the same process??

For commercial CDs that I own, the CDs themselves are my backups.
For the live shows and other collections, I typically burn a CD with the original format I received  (IE: flac, shn, ape) and that serves as my backup.

I keep the database backed up (Tools -> Library -> Backup) on a client pc and both the server (non-multimedia only) and client are backed up to tape.

With over 1TB in music alone there aren't many options.

I currently have 6x300GB in a RAID5 array, 6x200GB in another RAID5 array, and 6x100GB in yet another RAID5 array.  I've got a 2TB volume (max size for 32 bit platforms) and a 1TB volume.  Of course when I go 6x400 (probably by the end of this year once prices drop) in RAID5 I'll have room to rearrange my other raid sets first and probably retire the 6x100GB set.

The RAID5 protects against single-unit failures.  The original media (CDs) protect against simple "mistakes".  Unfortunately I don't have any real protection against catastrophic failure - I won't lose data but there will be a signifcant effort to rerip everything in this scenario

I've got a PIII 1GHz with 1GB memory running Red Hat EL3AS as my server.  Samba 3.0.1 makes it all available to my Win PCs.

I should also mention that I'm using native software RAID and LVM from RHEL.  Rebuilding arrays after power failure takes signficant time (regardless of implementation) so I've got this box on a 1KVA UPS.  Power in my area isn't exactly "stable".  You'd think living 1/4 mile from the power plant would help but in fact it makes it worse:  As power factor correction gets switched in and out the resulting spike (or drop) combined with the signifcant phase shift tends to cause PCs to reboot.  During the summer the UPS typically records a pair of these events each day. . .

I have just over 25000 MP3s that are tagged in my library and about another 8000 to go.  I concentrate on quality rather than quantity so all my tracks have been carefully vetted and every one is fully tagged.  About 70% have been rated and a similar number have lyrics.  All except some compilation albums have the correct cover art.

All of this collecting and tagging took many hours over the last couple of years, hence I take regular back ups to an identical hard drive which is in a removable caddy.  I keep this at work to protect me against fire or theft.  From reading the posts this seems to be the main thing that people forget to guard against.  There's not much point in having a backup on some media in your house (the original CD's for instance) if it's stolen with the PC or the house burns down.

Ha!  I wish I could leverage our systems at work for my backups.  We passed a Yottabyte (that's a Tera-Terabyte) of disk storage three years ago and it is increasing at a phenomal rate.

I do backup everything but the actual media files (wav, flac, ape, etc) themselves.  I don't have any way to realistically protect against catastrophic failure, but in that event I figure I'll have a bit more to worry about than my media collection

I too focus on quality, which is why I'm staying with lossless.   I don't have lyrics yet, but I do have cover art for most collections and I do fill in as much of the library fields as possible.  Notes and Comments in particular are used very heavily, especially for live shows.
