Problems Ripping CD with v10.0.140/144
« on: May 22, 2004, 03:24:21 pm »

Anyone else having problems using the mp3 VBR encoder?? :'( :'(

Everytime I try and rip a CD...

...Lame.exe maxes out my CPU useage
...ripping speed won't go over 2.0X
...canceling a rip will stall MC and the only way to stop is to close lame.exe and Media Jukebox.exe from the Task Manager

I don't have any problems with internal or external MP3 encoder.

Could you be more specific? What settings were used? When the problem started? Did it work earlier? How about other formats?

You could do a two-stage test: first rip to wave, then convert to MP3. What happens?

Also paste your system info here from the Help menu.

It started with the last build I had installed (v10.0.137).

Here's some more info on various ripping tests I just did...
I'm also using Alchol 120%

ape (normal) = 18x
wave = 55-70x
mp3 VBR (Quality=Very High/High)= 1X
mp3 VBR (Quality=Normal/Normal)= 4x

I ripped a song into wave then converted it to mp3

mp3 VBR (Quality=Very High/High)= looks like the same speed 1x
mp3 VBR (Quality=Normal/Normal)= looks like the same speed 4x

Try disabling Alchol...

I used to have a different virtual drive software and MC would run brutally slow with it.

That's the key...  The Lame encoder is what's limiting your rip speed.  If you have it set to rip and encode simultaniously, it will slow down the ripping process.

Have you tried running a conversion to mp3 using another program to see if it's MC's copy of Lame that is the problem?  How fast was it before you noticed a problem?

I only ever use APE for music CDs, but I did rip some comedy CDs directly to mp3 and it was much slower than ripping to APE...  That's normal.

Can you paste your system settings again since you disabled Alcohol?

Thanks,

Alcohol 120% wasn't the problem...I disabled it then ripped a few tracks with MC but was just as slow...

...But if it will help I could disabled it again and paste my System info

Running v10.0.144

Found a work around...

When I rip using...

High/High = 0.8x

-h -V 0 --vbr-new = 5.5x

-h -V 0 --vbr-old = 4.2x

--preset standard = 4x

--preset standard  --vbr-new = 6x

Is 5x-6x normal ripping speed??
