FoxyTunes -- control MC from your browser
« on: October 18, 2004, 09:46:14 am »

I found this rather cool extension for Firefox the other day, which allow you to control MC from your browser (if your browser is Firefox that is.) It also shows playing now, and you can skip track, pause among others.

You can get the extension here:
http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=219&vid=706

There's unfortunately some bugs with MC, but it's open source so some bright mind may be able to get it working a 110%.

Here's how to install it:
list]
  • Install extension
  • click on the note, chose Player-->select-->Generic Player
  • click on the note, chose Player-->options-->custom
  • Type this in the field: -c "MJFrame" -m 2
It works!

Please Remember to Vote for MC.
See how we're doing (the gold is currently a third place).

edit: Darn I can't have been in my right mind when I wrote this! all the spelling mistakes :P I also added a link to the poll and the poll result.
edit2: there have been installed anti swearing software

Wow, thanks for pointing this out.  Just in case you happen to know the answer (if not I will post on the FoxyTunes site), do you know if you can control MC remotely via this extension?  Currently, I run MC on my desktop and play MP3s controlled via NetRemote from my laptop on my LAN.   I actually do have MC installed on both my laptop and desktop, but virtually never run it on my laptop as I have no MP3s on the laptop hard drive.   My setup works really well, but I have to run an extra little app (NetRemote) which connects to the MC server on the desktop.  If I could do that with this extension, that is one less prog I would have to run on my laptop.

I have installed the extension, but I can't see how to remotely connect it (or even if that is possible).  Do you happen to know?  Other than that, good find!!

Thanks,
R.

That feature currently doesn't work with MC (10 or 11).  It is planned for future releases.

Do you mean remote access does not currently work with FoxyTunes ?  (sorry, there was a question in between mine and your answer).

Thanks,

I think he meant showing currently playing track.

You should try to post a request for it in the official forum.

Better support for MC would definitely be way cool!

Yeah. I call upon all Firefox- and MC-users to go to http://www.iosart.com/foxytunes/firefox/ and vote for MC (Vote for your player on the right side of the webpage). It's on 9th place now and just needs another 42 votes to go to third place (I don't dare dream about 138 votes and first pace).

The top 4 players are already fully supported, I think.  So, we need to get it into at least 5th place.  It should be in first.  13 votes needed for 5th place.  Vote.

Edit: I got it up to 26 votes.  Now we need at least 11 to overtake XMMS and grab 5th place.

We're ahead by one. Keep the votes coming.

Also,
there has been released a newer version, 0.69, but support for Media Center hasn't been improved. I send the author a mail telling him, very polite of course, that he aught to do something 'bout it.
You can get the new version from foxytunes.com/firefox

Rooster,
there has been added custom hot keys, you may be able to use that for your remote-thingy, if you assign the different keys on the remote to a special combination of keys, and configure FF to do react in the wanted way when those keys are pressed. Get it?

59 now; two above 4th place.  I'm glad to see that at least one email was written asking for better support.  I don't understand why the average rating went down to 4.3 though.

Thanks Jim! It's outstanding 'service' to the users to encourage 3rd party plug ins. I look forward to 'full' FT support. If it's good, will you put it on the plug in side?

Based on the comments in FoxyTunes comments it looks like folks think they're grading FoxyTunes and not MC11!

Much thanks, Jim.  We're up to 72 votes already; that's great.  I'm looking forward to full support and the final release of MC11.  Now the only thing I'm looking for is a plugin that can grab shares from iTunes library sharing system.

Come on, guys and girls, show them our (MC's) strength and let's beat iTunes and WinAmp (http://www.iosart.com/foxytunes/firefox/voteforplayer.php)

Hello to everyone,

I'm Alex, the author of FoxyTunes :)

Just wanted to let you know that your votes worked – I've just implemented native support for MC in FoxyTunes.

You can get the newest version of FoxyTunes here:
http://www.iosart.com/foxytunes/firefox/FoxyTunes_0.69.PR3.xpi

You will see that JRiverMediaCenter now appears in "Player > Select".

This is a preview version and if everything goes according to plan it will become official in a few days.

I will love to hear any feedback on this version of FoxyTunes, you can use the online feedback form for that (http://www.iosart.com/foxytunes/firefox/feedback.html).

I want to use this opportunity to thank Jim Hillegass for supporting FoxyTunes development by providing MC licenses.

It is great to see that JRiver has a wonderful community of users and that the JRiver team is there to support this community.

Enjoy,
Alex

Wow. It works. Thank you very much Alex and all you MC-fans that voted and made this possible.
The only thing we still need now is the possibility to start MC minimized (that is in the System tray)

If you have it in the statusbar, click the Main Menu button and select JRiverMediaCenter under Players.  Under Configuration, check Update Track Title on Startup.  You may need to restart, but I doubt it.

See this page for a picture of what I'd like to see.  It's under the first heading, "The Many Faces of FoxyTunes", and it's the last picture under that heading.  it shows the currently playing track info.

I cannot get this to work.

I'm guessing it's not available since MC is still under "Generic player", and not listed directly under a player.

I have checked the 'update track on startup' but it does nothing.

PS I still like it, I would just like to see the track if possible.

I've never had anything else installed.  I waited for support before even downloading.

I have version 0.69 for FoxyTunes, and  11.0.106 for MC installed.

Where the song should be, I just see Media Center, nothing else.

I have restarted both FireFox, and my machine.  Still no luck. :(

Did you go to the musical notes icon and go Player/Select and chose JRiver...?

I also notice that I still have JRiver chosen under Player/Options, I'm not sure if that does anything?

Good luck!

If you got .69 from the FoxyTunes site, than all you're going to see is "Media Center"  Uninstall your current one; restart FF; install the one posted by iosart in this thread; restart FF.  If all you see is "Idle," click the pause button twice.

This is the only place I can select JRiver.  i have to select generic player under Player/Select.  I read at his site that this was how to set it up for MC.

Anyone else having trouble with this?

I uninstalled the extension, restarted, and reinstalled it, and it's still the same.

It seems you are installing the wrong 0.69 version of FoxyTunes.
The one with MC support is 0.69.PR3 and the link can be found in my post. The site doesn't link to this version yet, and the FAQ isn't updated with the most recent instructions for MC. Try this:
1. Install 0.69.PR3
2. Restart Firefox
3. Choose Player > Select > JRiverMediaCenter (it will now appear here)
4. That's it!

Please note that you shouldn't select the GenericPlayer, and "Player > Options" doesn't really mean anything with this setup.
