New Auto Installer in build 118
« on: November 08, 2004, 01:25:33 pm »

Note that we're testing a new web-installer component.

We realize everyone won't always want to use this.  For now, please play along.

We're not wondering whether you like it -- just whether it works.  We'll provide manual downloads again in the future in the case that you don't like it.

Thanks for any help.

[Edit below by JimH]

When you select the install link above, we launch an Active X Control and you'll see the following text:

JRiver Media Center 11 Download Page
Your download should begin in the next ten seconds.

If you're having problems, here are some things that will help.

We recommend using Internet Explorer 5.0 or above to download.  Active X support must be enabled.  This allows an automated install.

You will be asked if you "trust" content from JRiver.  You must say yes to continue the download.  (On XP Service Pack 2, the question is embedded in the top of the Window, so look carefully there.)

Other browsers or some corporate environments may require using a more basic type of download which you can start by clicking here.

I'm just glad I use Firefox which doesn't seem to allow this audacious hijacking of my system.  ;D

OK Matt, heres a quick response - it worked. AFAIK. I downloaded the executable first for my archive, mind you.

I had to restart XP, and the message upon restart was that finalising install failed - couldnt copy JRoptions.dll. Sorry thats probably not the exact filename. MC starts seemingly OK though. Havent played any further.

I note that the webautoinstall application is a JRiver creation - had to set my software firewall to always allow this app to make a connection.

The install download dialog adds nothing to the MC install experience for me, but I assume you are planning to use the space for some promotion or something. Ultimately I cant see the advantage right now.

Dunno what Omni means about audacious hijacking - because Im naive, not because it aint relevant. Anybody want to explain?

I think it's a joke.  ActiveX controls can be used to do bad things.  Our ActiveX control is perfectly safe.

After I'd OK'ed the Active X component for the page the d/load worked fine but crashed on the screen "Media Centre has found a copy of MC running - do you want to close it and continue the inbstallation". I clicked OK and nothing else happened at all sadly.

Had to d/load it the normal way.

Sirshambling,
Can you tell us what program you use as a virus checker?  Do you have any other special security set up?

Thanks,

In my case it worked properly, but I notice a big disadvantage:

As I cannot save the exe file any longer, I have to download the same executable 3 times If I want to upgrade all my 3 pc's.

*nods*

Yeah, I was just joking...well, sort of.  I detest ActiveX controls, so much so that I even wrote my own service to monitor and block them.  :P  (Footnote:  My service has somewhat become obsolete with the release of SP2.)

Anyway, even if I trust the source (which, in this case, I do implicitly!), I still don't like ActiveX controls if for no other reason than mere system bloat.

Me:  Launch Internet Explorer!
Windows XP:  Okay, but please wait while I load in 700+ plug-ins first.

(I'm exaggerating, of course.)

There is a link to the old exe on the page that is launched.  It's in the last line.

windows internet explorer 6.0.2900

if the pop up blocker is on will give a notice to install the activeX

it allowed the install once i click on let it.

Norton Internet Security Asked If I Should Give Access To The ActiveX Control, Once I Said Yes The Download Started.

and the install went on with no problems.

Jim,

I've got Norton AV and Zone Alarm 5.1 running - that's all. I had to "allow" the d/load in ZA before it started.

I'm on Win XP SP2 if that's of any use.

Tried it... After 15 min only one block was filled in blue so I quit and used the FTP download. 3min to download and install via FTP. Don't know how long the Active X Web Installer would have taken but would not want to try that again.

Why do you want to use this kind of installation instead of the old one?

Worked fine here on XP SP2. Didn't seem to take any more or less time to download then the old way.

Would I be correct in assuming that this could someday serve to intelligently update MC in such a way that it would only download the necessary (updated) files and not the whole thing?

Consider that the machine being used for downloads might not be the media center itself.  Thus forcing them right into installation might not be such a good idea.  This could be solved with a little better text on the downloading page.  As in 'click here to install' or 'here to download'.

Worked fine on Windows 2000.
It's ok by me as long as a direct download option is still available.  Would rather download to main server and then install from UNC share instead of going to the internet from each desktop.
It would be cool if it became a "live update" sort of thing that only downloaded newer files.

The download is very slow on my system.
When I did the manual FTP it took less than 5 minutes to get the file.
After 15 minutes I am still looking at the Web install window showing around 40%.

I'm sorry I guess I wasn't clear... What I ment was that since the Active X Web Installer didn't install the new MC11 version in the 15 Mins I gave it I didn't know how long it would take as I gave up and switched to the FTP download and Install approch. It it true that installing the Active X Control itself was a fast couple of seconds install.

Well it worked, but it was slow.  My major problem is the limited browser support, many people have switched to FireFox these days.  I am thinking that you may be testing this out to see if it is a viable install alternative for a more newbie friendly MC (e.g. Best Buy version), but all of the dialogs and blocked ActiveX messages from IE during initial install may be difficult for newbies to figure out.  I think users are familiar with a download and install metaphor.

I see the bigger problem being getting users to upgrade/update when appropriate.  For that you need a built in check for updates/autoinstaller.  I personally would focus on that type of functionality rather than a first time installer.

My 2 cents: I like to be able to see the download speed and time left that the standard IE download window provided. Can this be added to the auto installer dialog?

It doesn't work for me ... Of course, I too use FireFox exclusively, so you probably won't be too suprised.   ;)

I won't get into a tizzy on ActiveX and IE-exclusivity, because Matt asked so nicely ... for now.  When the time comes though, I imagine there will be some people up on the soapboxes ...
