Topic: Ipod Initialization Error (Read 4684 times)

I'm having a bit of trouble getting my iPod Photo 60 recognized by MC11 (using the latest build 11.0.245). Not sure if its a bug in the build or just regular old operator error.

I did all the stuff that I needed to do up front, like formatting the pod. So, it's now recognized by my PC and has it's own drive assignment.

I plugged it in and opened MC11. Went to the tree and selected iPod under Drives and Devices and it gave me this error box:
Initialization failure. Device not found.

Same thing if I try using the Action Window. Do I need an iPod handheld plug-in? Is there one available for MC11?

The iPod works fine with iTunes so I don't believe it's the device. Any thoughts?

You don't need a plug-in.

Try unplugging the iPod and plugging it back in again.

Try rebooting Windows.

When it isn't working in MC, can you still see it in Explorer?

I had this same problem when loggin in as something other than an administrator.

If that is your case, look for a thread titled something like, loggin in WITHOUT admin rights, or womething like that. Steve explains how to use your iPod in that situation.

Jim, I've plugged-unplugged a few times. Rebooted a few times, too. Still same problem. Opened Windows Explorer and I found it as a separate drive. So, those suggestions don't seem to be working...

Justin, I'm working in my administrator profile so that's not the solution, either. Thanks for that suggestion, though.

Jim, I've shut down iTunes and iTunesHelper.exe. Still getting the same message. Any other thoughts?

What is the name of the player when you view it in Explorer?

Also, try tools/options/handhelds/ and reset detected devices.

Ahhh, you might be on to something. During the iPod setup, it gave me the option to change my iPod's name. The device is called: CHRIS'S IPO. Might that make a difference?

BTW, I've tried resetting with same results.

If you have not already done so, disable the auto detect of iPod by iTunes. Then if you are still stuck, try deleting the iTunesDB file from your iPod (from within Explorer) and then try again.

I still can't make it work. Don't know guys...I had lousy luck with getting MC to work with a Rio Karma and now an iPod. I was really hoping that it would be better this time. Looks like I'm back to iTunes unless there's something else that I can do.

Am I the only one who has had this problem?

You didn't say whether you'd tried changing the name or either of Steve's suggestions.

I don't know what's going on. It should just work.

Yep, did as Steve suggested. From what I can figure out, the archives don't offer any other ideas. Which is where I figure it's more of the quirks of my PC setup than MC11.

I'm still open to suggestions, but until something pans out, I'll work with iTunes.

Please try the following...

1) Disable the auto detect of iPod by iTunes.

2) Disconnect iPod.

3) Log in as an admin user.

4) Go to Tools->Options->Handheld and click on 'Reset configured devices'

5) Close MC.

6) Connect iPod.

7) Delete the iTunesDB file from your iPod (from within Explorer) .

Run MC. When it detects iPod, say OK.

A lot of these steps are unnecessary, but I want to be sure we don't miss anything. Please follow them exactly.

Jim, I changed it back to IPOD as you suggested. It shows in MC's tree as IPOD. Still get the same error.

Steve, did everything in the order you suggested. After step 7, when I ran MC, it did detect it and I clicked OK. Then it gave me the original error.

Ack, back to the drawing board.

Your iPod is not being recognized by our detection system as an iPod. Please open Windows Media Player and see if it detects your iPod. If so, please post exactly what it says your iPod is (e.g. iPod (G:). Also, please open Windows Explorer and post exactly what is listed for your iPod. No one else is reporting this so please also mention if you have done anything off the beaten track with the configuration of your iPod photo.

Howdy Steve, it's recognized by Media Player as IPOD (G:). When I open up the drive in Explorer, this is the tree structure:
IPOD (G:)
Calendars
Contacts
iPod_Control
Device
iTunes
Music
Notes
Photos
Thumbs

I haven't put any music on the player yet. I might just delete it all out and see if I can't reupdate the iPod. Just work it all back to factory and see if that doesn't work. I can't think of anything weird that I did in the configuration process.

Chris,

Does MC dispay the iPod in the tree as 'IPOD (G:)' of as 'iPod'? (Should be just 'iPod'). You could try creating a path to the iPod manually in Tools->Options->Handheld->Configure remote and fixed drives. Browse to the iPod and name it something other than iPod and see if you can access it in the tree without a crash.

In the tree, it shows up as just 'iPod'. When I created a manual path, it did seem to work at first (although right-clicking didn't do anything). I exited MC and opened it again to see what would happen. Now, I have the original 'iPod' still giving me the initialization error and the new 'My iPod' telling me Plugin Not Installed.

Any thoughts?

Chris,

If you do a reset under 'Tools->Options->Handheld' and then say 'No' to detecting iPod as a device and then manually browse to the iPod, you will get rid of the two iPods being displayed. However, underneath this is a fundamental problem with how your iPod is presenting itself to the PC (at least in the way MC is set to detect it). Lets review the hardware side of this. Please reconfirm what OS you are running, what version iPod and what firmware you have installed.

The problem you are having in MC 10 appears the same but is not. The way MC 10 detects iPod is totally different than MC 11. Try renaming the volume label on your iPod to 'IPOD' and see if your problem goes away.

The iPod I'm using is the Photo 60 GB (v 1.1) from iPod Updater 2005-03-23.

Manually updating still tells me: Plug-in Not Installed.

I updated my iPod photo to 1.1 and everything continues to run well. Is anyone else having issues getting iPod photo being recognized by MC 11?

Chris, if no one else can confirm your issue, we have to look more closely at what is different for you. I have a 30gb photo, but that should not make a difference. Other than that, our setups are pretty similar.

Is the best course of action to dial everything back to factory? Should I uninstall iTunes completely? If I restore the iPod using the Updater program, will that reinitialize it and perhaps help?

Your specs look OK. If you have turned off the option for iTunes to auto detect your IPod, you iTunes should not conflict. Are you sure you turned this option off?

None of this should be necessary, but I don't know what the issue is you are having. Try the restore using the updater program and then reinitialize using MC (Right click option). Make sure all auto sync options are turned off. Click on the iPod and if it crashes, send me your iTunesDB file from iPod and that may tell me something (steve @ jriver.com ).

Another thought. Are you having any luck using your Ipod with any other app? I ask so that we can rule out any hardware issues.
