4. It appears that in some cases, it's a punctuation problem in the folder name and/or the file name--the best example so far is my Bjork folder containing filenames with fractions and other 'foreign' characters...

Strange. For example these files can be imported just fine on my PCs (W2k and XP - MC11.0):
Code: [Select]
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\Björk - Gling-Gló.jpg
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\01 - Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Gling Gló.mp3
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\02 - Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Luktar-Gvendur.mp3
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\03 - Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Kata Rokkar.mp3
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\04 - Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Pabbi Minn.mp3
X:\Björk\Gling-Gló\05 - Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Brestir Og Brak.mp3

Are your filename paths extremely long?

I have 2 examples of problem albums, the Bjork album and a Bob Dylan Essential cd, neither of which have excessive file lengths.

Dragging single mp3 (samples of my 30,000+) works ok but when I select 50 or 100 at a time and drag, I get the freeze.

Here is the last few of the log file, which probably is not informative:

I hope this thread isn't dying; I would like to know if the developer is still concerned...

My latest attempts at making Import work:

Same freeze-up when trying to import mirrored library on remote network drive.

Same freeze-up when attempting to import all except "mpeg" or "mpeg" only...

I'd check the permissions of my hundreds of music folders IF there is a batch processing method to do that...

In the meantime, WinAmp, while not as elegant as MC, allows me to listen to my music...
Use Windows to set the permissions.

The problem you have is probably not an MC problem.

You can prove that by copying the files to a local drive and import them there.

There are all kinds of possible problems with networks.  Samba had naming problems.  Drivers can have bugs.  Etc. etc.

Have you tried the manufacturer of the network drive?  Have you tried google?

Jim:

Please remember that the original problem in my case was/is on a local drive, not a network drive.

The error message title is 'playbackeng'

My drive has been defragmented and otherwise tested for integrity.

Is MC11 filename length requirements any different from Windows Explorer and other applications?

Are there any known punctuation or other anomalies in MC11 that users should know about?

File names should not be a problem.

What is the drive?  USB?  Ordinary local IDE drive?  What brand of drive?

The drive is the third SATA in a new-this-year Intel mobo workstation.

Note that Google only finds the term PlayBackEng in Interact; is this in your code?

The text inside the PlaybackEng window is "The parameter is incorrect." for the record.

Import freezes when looking for files in an empty folder; the partial message in the "Importing Media" window at time of crash is "Updating library to match external changes...  File 107 of 201"

How do I delete the existing library (clean slate)?

Brand?

Did you try one of the other drives?  Are they the same?

Three identical drives, probably Maxtor.

I worked on my "Problem" folder, using each time a clean library, from several dozen down to one file, each time getting the freeze.  Putting 1 mp3 back, it imported ok--putting more back freezes...

Guess tonight I'll try my second drive if you want to reduce the possibilities...

Jim, (and Nick, FYI)

What about the email I sent you -- the burner error of the same ilk?  I got the same "the parameter is incorrect" when I was using Nero to burn a data DVD (the burn worked fine, but it froze during cleanup and i had to kill Nero with the TM).  I'm wondering if these two instances are related and therefore point us to some other issue in Windows.

Now, I've been retagging my files and found some interesting things unrelated to this puzzle, but for craps and giggles I tried again to import a directory that I thought would work.  This time, it imported the first but not the second file.  Note that, from the log file below, these files differ only by one character in the filename.  Please confirm that we're having path-length problems here, someone?

Code: [Select]
3:31:05 PM: Import: GetNewFiles: Finish (31 ms)
3:31:05 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles: Start
3:31:05 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: R:\retaggedmusic\Instructional\Hal Leonard\Hal Leonard - 1 - Ear Training Guitar Method.mp3
3:31:05 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles:     New File: R:\retaggedmusic\Instructional\Hal Leonard\Hal Leonard - 1 - Ear Training Guitar Method.mp3
3:31:05 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: R:\retaggedmusic\Instructional\Hal Leonard\Hal Leonard - 10 - Ear Training Guitar Method.mp3
3:31:05 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles: Finish (219 ms)

Significant results, Jim:

I mirrored my database from third to second hd and imported all files (except the obvious non-audio junk) into a new library without freeze.  (about 50,000+)

What does this mean?  I had defragged and otherwise checked the questionable drive with several progs and found no problems; any further suggestions before I toss the drive?  What about a full reformat?  Is this a red herring or indicative of some actual hd defect?  This would not seem to be an answer to some of the other users' problems above...

I don't know what it means, but you could try running the "Error checking" you'll find in Windows Explorer if you right click on the drive and go to properties/tools.

Thanks for reporting the solution.

Wait a second.  "Solution"?  Shirley, you must be kidding.  That's not a solution, it's a workaround.  WinAmp, MusicMatch, iTunes, JetAudio and Windows Media Player all work like a charm with the network drive.  I know because I downloaded and tested all of them.  Repeat: like a charm.

Now, if one of those programs allowed me to manage the filesystem like Media Center, I would be inclined to switch.

There MUST be something going on during the import process that throws that error, and I'm clearly frustrated with it.

That doesn't demonstrate where the problem is, Laverne.

Each program stresses a system in a different way.  Bugs are triggered by unique combinations of events.

So let me make my request again.  Help us understand what's going on during the import process.  Are these home-grown filesystem requests or are you using some Windows-native stuff?  What step does it fail on repeatedly?  What about the joliet standard?  Does it matter?  Does the path length in characters factor into it?  Is it the filename length in characters plus the path length in characters?  Can we please dig into this a little?

The follow-on:
I reformatted the 'problem' drive, mirrored my new mirror back onto the 'problem' drive, and imported my whole library without incident.

Has there been any progress on this network drive issue.  I have exactly the same problem described - MC works fine on local drives, importing from other PCs on my local network, etc., but I purchased a new Simpleshare 250GB NAS and get exactly the same error as in this thread.  locks up with "incorrect parameter" error message.  Network drive works fine with other audio software.

Help.

You're right--no activity for some weeks.  I never had the NAS problem because I didn't try transferring my library to my NAS (Maxtor) so I did that the same day of your post.  My problem was an apparent hd problem solved by transferring my library to another hd in my workstation and re-importing.

This worked until I tried the NAS library storage and got the same old lockup problem others have reported above.  So I deleted my library in MC and tried to reimport it from the same drive I have been successfully using for many weeks, now I get the same-old same-old or a soft crash with the tattle message to Microsoft.  So now it appears that MC is "contaminated" again.

If you have read this entire thread, it's apparent that this import problem is not on the tech support hot list...IMO it's too bad that MC is relatively elegant compared to MusicMatch, WinAmp and others I have tried--I keep hoping that the import problem will actually be solved...
