I just purchased a 60 gig iPod (new one that is the renamed iPod photo) and connected it to my laptop that does not have iTunes installed on it and started up Media Center.  It saw the iPod and asked me whether I wanted to do any automatic syncing.  I told it that I'd manually manage the iPod.    Next a window pops up telling me that  it had started to "Initializing Portable..." this proceeds for some time, at which point.  MC crashes with the following message:

An unhandled win32 exception occurred in MediaCenter.exe [1604]

It enters the debugger (VS2005) and has the following message:
Unhandled exception at 0x03c3ab9d in Media Center.exe: 0xC0000005:
Access violation reading location 0x202cfffe

It takes me to this location in the disassembly:
03C3AB9D  rep movs    dword ptr es:[edi],dword ptr [esi]


This is reproducable each time I try to initialize the iPod.

Am I doing something wrong?

Figured I'd add.  The user i'm using is a Memeber of the "Administrator" group, in case that was an issue.

Try using Windows Explorer to browse to your iPod. Locate your iTunesDB file (in iPod_Control) and delete it. Try connecting again and then if it works, right click on your iPod and select 'Initialize' to start cleanly. If that does not work, try running iPod updater on your iPod (from Apple).

When I do that... and initialize the iPod, will the existing songs on it be orphaned?  I don't really care about them... but I'll delete them first, if that is the case.

When you initialize the iPod, it removes all the files from the iPod.

Cool.  That's sort of what I'd figured, but I wasn't sure.  Would you like me to try to get any more information about the crash during initialization that I'm getting now?  I'm happy to try to get more information if it would help with anything...

For now, see if my instructions solve the issue and then lets go from there.

Deleting the iTunesDB didn't work, but restoring the iPod worked.

Thanks for the help.  I'm happy to try to recreate the problem is you'd like.... now that i know how to fix it.
