This is really odd but it's happened to me several times so I'm convinced it's an MC problem.

I've rated a lot of songs on my 60GB iPod Photo, and the ratings are important to me as I use them for the basis for playlists etc, as well as rating songs on the go.

The sequence of events is like this.

1. Pick up iPod with lots of songs rated. Check iPod: songs are rated!
2. Start MC.
3. Dock iPod. "Initializing iPod" is displayed. (Takes several seconds).
4. Click on iPod device in tree... file list is displayed. All songs are shown as unrated!
5. Eject iPod. Check iPod: all songs are now unrated! Please note that at this stage I have done nothing but dock the iPod, check the file list and eject it.
6. Dock iPod and synchronise. 4000+ songs are deleted and retransferred because it's now overwriting the unrated versions with the proper rated versions from MC.
7. Eject iPod. Check iPod: songs are now rated again... until next time.

Now this is REALLY irritating for several reasons:
1. It takes ages to transfer all these songs every time I synchronise.
2. It prevents me from rating songs on the move.
3. There's a danger that if I tick the "sync data to MC" box, all my MC ratings will be overwritten with blank ratings from the iPod.

I assume MC is somehow overwriting the ratings when it first initialises the iPod as a device when it is docked. This is happening with the release 309 version of MC, although I think it's a recent problem as I've only been experiencing this lately.

Nothing has changed recently, so think back if you have installed new firmware or software for iPod that may have had a negative effect (as far as MC is concerned). In particular, have you updated your iPod firmware?

Yes, I have - version 2.2 of the iPod firmware came out a few weeks ago and I updated (as I have done with every firmware release on this and older iPods). I haven't installed any other iPod-related software recently though. Do you think there might be a compatibility issue here?

Has there been any resolution to this matter?

My issue is, in effect, the opposite of what others are reporting. I'm using iTunes against my will as I need the photo support (hurry up MC11!). When iTunes adds music to its database it fails to pull in the ratings I've created in Media Center.

I too have recently updated my iPod's software but I just got the thing so I don't know if it is related to the upgrade.

I'm having this problem too! It's not just the ratings, either. In MC's iPod view, play counts and the 'last played' indicator are beyond corrupted. I thought this was happening because I dropped my iPod, but yeah, I am using the new update, even though I don't think the Apple website says there wasn't anything new for the 60 GB iPod photo.

First of all, on top of a complete wipe of all ratings (this is based on a completely unplayed recently re-imported library of 2,153 mp3 files and docking after playing the first song in a playlist), a bunch of play counts turn from 0 to 40, 60, 80 or 100. Second, the 'last played' field is a negative number which starts at about 30,283 hours in the future.

Synchronizing doesn't seem to erase the ratings on my hard drive files, but it doesn't reflect accurate 'last played' times and therefore synchronizing after playing songs is pointless and only serves to muck up my new play counts and last played fields, which are pretty much what my smartlists rely on to rotate the songs properly. Also, when copying a song to my hard drive manually and viewing the tag with MC, the rating still exists, so the problem seems entirely with the iPod database files.

My computer still runs Windows98 and it's old so XP is out of the question until I get myself another computer, which is far, far in the future. I have to go to CompUSA to do a complete restore with one of the display models. So far, the CompUSAicans don't bother me after I tell them "I'm just looking" even if my iPod is hooked up. I only have to go there whenever I get a warranty replacement (this would be my third iPod Photo since May) and this problem only cropped up recently when I had to use the newer software.

Is this anywhere near a solution? I'm using 10.0.173 and I don't need MC11's new features and I don't think I should have to pay $25 more to be able to use the old features I already bought. That's reasonable, isn't it? Please?

This issue is resolved and waiting for a release. They will not be resolved for MC 10.

Just checked, nothing's been fixed. :-(

I'm just curious to know whether it is such a huge problem to incorporate the patch into a new build?! Steve's announcement is almost 2 weeks old now..what is happening here?
