A Proposal on Ratings
« on: August 01, 2005, 12:35:43 am »

well you all know that you can rating a song either 1/2/3/4/5. but I think it would be more efficient if we can rating as 4.5/3.5 or so on.

well i've seen some program having this feature. even in various site we can see that there are 4.5/4.25 etc rating. for this i've always wanted this feature in media center as it is my number `1 player

i wish jriver will consider this issue

As long as I do not have to type to rate things.
Personally, I have < 20 rated 5, <200 rated 4, and some 1s. No 2s and 3s.

I'd like MC to have an average rating for those .5... For instance, if you group an album, then you'd probably want to see an average rating of 4.3 and so on...but not  a single song... in my opinion, that is. :)

Go to the library browser.
Choose Albums
You'll see like '8 files - 1:37'
Put your mouse pointer over that but don't click.

I know, but it only works within the Library browser, nowhere else...I suggested once that JRiver could include an Average function into the DB Expressions...let's see what happens in the future!
But in this topic, I'm not really into having decimals in my ratings...

I'd love to see .5 ratings as well..... I use the AMG site for ratings and they have 3.5, 4.5 etc.
I know I can do this in a seperate field, but I would'nt see the pretty stars!!

How would you do it ?

Indicate half as opposed to full.

On a 1024x768 screen, there is barely enough space to click to the left or right of a star.

Maybe another key might need to be pressed when doing a rating. hmmmm... ?

Not so sure on that.

I like the idea of adding . to the ratings.  To take it a little further, I would like another set of 3 rateable stars, next to the word genre.  So that we can rate tracks for that particular genre also.

Wouldn't it be great if you could assign a rating to a genre or artist or record label tag independently from a particular file, so that automatically when new files are added with that genre/artist/label, they automatically show up in view schemes with that rating?   ;D

I think that might cause a problem with MC trying to write changes to tags all over the place while you're not fully aware of what is going to happen (I mean, if you import 300 tracks which MC is set up to 'auto-tag', it could create problems), however I'm sure that some system of deferring the writing process could be devised; maybe a confirmation dialog, or a specific 'write auto-tags to files' function, like 'update tags from library'...

I don't know enough about it, but I'm hoping that some way of doing this will emerge from the Expression Evaluator...   ;)
