Messed up Girlfriends Ipod :-S
« on: October 24, 2005, 06:53:54 pm »

Girlfriend mentioned the other day that she
would like to copy something of my computer and onto her IPod.
I said sure just bring it round.. so she did.

At the time I was on 11.0.Latest...
Plugged the IPod in and MC crashed.
I took a quick browse here and read something mentioning it
and it being solved in latest 11.1..
So I downloaded 11.1.39.
Plugged in the IPod and all looked good...

Anyhow I then asked MC to send some tracks (APE Format) to
the IPod, converting them to MP3.  Hit the transfer button...
and waited...

15 minutes later or so and it looked like they'd
been transfered across succesffully.
I then played them off the IPod successfully.
Looked good.

Gf then took the pod home.
When she tried to play her music (what was on there previously)
she found all the playlists had corrupted.
When she tried to play my music she couldn't find it.
Pluging in the ipod to ITunes came up with some error
telling her to do an Ipod Restore...

So she then did the restore and that
removed everything off her pod  :o

So i guess the question is what'd I do wrong?!
Theres lots of posts here at the moment but they're
all non correlated on these issues!
Is IPod really this much of a no go zone at the moment?!

Ipod she has is a Nano, with software version 1.4?

Good news is, she hasn't dumped me yet  ;D

I believe that Apple changed their database format with the latest update.  For example, my iPod used to display regular track names, but now they are just cryptic, "j3hd8wl.m4a" for example.

Sorry for any current bumps in 11.1. What happens if after running MC and sending files, you view the iPod in iTunes on your PC?

(I assume your girlfriend does not have MC installed so we need to look at the cross platform compatibility of iTunes and MC).

Will have to get back to you on that one.
I don't know if it has any relation but the software version of
Itunes on my computer is quite old (4.7).
I'll update it to the latest version.
Girlfriend doesn't use MC.

One question.  If I just make an exact copy
of all the files on the IPod before letting MC
at it, am I doing a full backup? (Just so if I mess
it up again I can quickly restore it)

Yes. But it must include all the files.
