Unable to restart Windows with Media Server running
« on: October 31, 2005, 09:35:07 am »

Here's a strange one - I setup a new PC with WinXP SP2 a few days ago, and have discovered that I can't Restart or Shutdown Windows if Media Server is running!  I'll notice Windows closing down several of the system tray programs, but Media Server stays there and Windows doesn't notify me of any issues (like a hung program), it just doesn't shut down.

Once I right-click on the Media Server icon and Exit it, I can then restart Windows without any problems.  I'm using v11 Build 316.  Very weird!!!  Any ideas?  All suggestions would be much appreciated  ?

No solution, but a definite "Me too".  I came here to report exactly the same problem on both of my XPPro/SP2 machines and my Win2kPro/SP4 box.

Would either of you be willing to try the 11.1 alpha version? Be sure to back up your library first.

Are you running anything else with Media Server?  I'm thinking of the utility that allows Media Server to run as a service.

No, I simply copied the Media Server shortcut into my startup folder so it starts when I log in (though it also exhibits the same behaviour if I start it manually after I've logged in).

BTW, it also impacts the ability to log off rather than shut down (on my XP machines at least - haven't tried the W2k box).  Can't log off without first shutting down Media Server.

Any more info on this?  Is this a common problem, or is it just me and a few others?  Thanks in advance for any help.  ?

Have you tried the latest version of MC 11.1?

I have this exact same problem. It's been driving me crazy and I only recently identified Media Center server as the culprit. I'm using the latest version of 11.1

I just tried it, works fine for me. Make sure that TiVo Server is not running - there is a know problem with TiVo Server not allowing Windows to shutdown.
