MC crashing after +/- 1 hour
« on: November 05, 2005, 11:36:54 am »

Hi--

This is something new to me. MC is playing back swimmingly then all of a sudden it crashes.

There is a box that says: "Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

This is a new installation on a new system that seems to be running very well in all respects except this.

I did not notice it happening on smaller lists in Now Playing. Don't know if that's a clue to the problem.

Help would be appreciated.

Here's the system info:

I'm afraid I can't be of much help. The problem can be caused by almost anything. It can be a hardware stability problem or a software problem.

Some thoughts: The system info does not tell about your display adapter and soundcard. Have you installed the latest stable drivers? Also, various motherboard components like USB, PCI, the MB chipset etc may run better with correct drivers. Does the PC have adequate cooling? It might be a good idea to run some system stability test programs for ruling out some usual hardware problems like bad memory chips.

You may want to check this thread out: Topic: Weird and wonderful (freak problems solved). Hopefully it has something that sounds familiar to you.

A clue perhaps?

Seems like Media Core crashes when it attempts to play a low bitrate mp3--like 96.

I don't have many of these left. Most are old mono material. Blues or old jazz.

Where would these likely be getting rejected--MC10--ASIO--E-MU PatchMix?

Anybody got the fix?

Most likely your low bitrate files have sample rates below 44.100 kHz. Can your soundcard change sample rates automatically and does the ASIO driver support sample rates of 32 and 22.05 kHz?

Try DSP Studio > Output Format > 44.100 kHz

If that helps, you can just be happy and leave it there (It doesn't resample your 44.1 kHz files)

or use the Direct Sound or Wave Out output modes instead of ASIO

or try the ASIO4ALL v. 2.6 driver. It can handle sample rates below 44.1 kHz, but I don't know if your hardware is supported.

Thanx Alex--

I think you're on it.

I have MC set to ASIO. PatchMix software for E-MU sound card is set to 44.1.

I have a PatchMix guru who I'm sure has a workaround up his sleeve for this.

I'm sure that's where the issue is.

My last PatchMix had different settings. It presented no problem for any of my files. And I was using ASIO. It has to do with the way the Inserts are configured in PatchMix, which is still mostly a mystery to me...
