resizing cover art, good or bad idea?
« on: December 31, 2005, 10:01:03 pm »

I am running a  track info template as my visualization, i noticed that my cover art is in many sizes and because of this sometimes gets cut off in the track info template.

I am considering resizing my cover art to be all the same size, since about 3/4 of it is 300x300, that is the size that i am thinking about.

Would it be worth my effort to do this or i am just going to screw up something?, there are many image programs that will batch resize.

Yes, So You Want The Smaller Images To Look Pixlelated (Look Like Crap)?

It Is Best To Find Image Art At 500X500, At A Min 300x300

I resize everything to 900x900.

I start with 500x500 (Walmart.com) or 300x300 (Amazon.com). Anything  smaller will be too pixilated when resized.

I use 800x600 VGAs. When I started with MC 9, when using full screen view MC didn't resize the images to fill the screen and I like album covers to fill the screen. I have been doing it this way ever since. I know, I'm an old stick in the mud. ;D MC11 still doesn't stretch the cover art, (as far as I know).

900x900 was actually a mistake, it sould have been 800x800 for my screen resolution, I just never reset the Irfan batch converter and the images are sharp, even those converted from 300x300. For a different screen resolution, one could try a different size.

OK, forget resizing cover art, is there a simple way to replace all of it with 300x300 or 500x500 sized cover art?

If i was to replace my whole collection, going to either walmart or amazon for the cover art, what percentage could i expect to be completed, maybe 85% or so. I have approx. 1,000 albums in my collection so that would mean that i would more or less have to go out and manually get about 150 covers.

My collection consists of mostly mainstream pop and rock though a lot of it goes back to the late 60's and early 70's. No bootlegs, singles or even that many imports.

Within your track info template, why not simply specify the width of the image?

That way, the height will be automatically changed to keep the aspect ratio correct (and assuming that most of the covers should be pretty close to square, they should look fine).

ie. if you force the image to be 300 wide, it will be resized by the browser.

However, I have resized ALL of my cover art to be 400 x 400, as I find this to be a good mix of quality vs filesize...

Whatever works for you is best...

Well, if youre as anal retentive as I am, you could spend an entire day off manually picking the best quality cover art from amazon.com or walmart.com and then resizing them one by one to 250x250.

But thats just me, and some say I'm slightly OCD when it comes to stuff like that.

'dj2' - I'm not sure what that is? I use Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 for HTML authoring (I know - overkill for TITs)

What I meant was, if you look at the "image" tag in the HTML code of the TIT (you like that?), you could set it to something like:

<img src="filname.jpg" width="350">

This means that the image will appear as being 350 pixels wide in the browser window (regardless of its real size), and the height will be set accordingly (ie. if the file is 700 wide and 400 high, it will appear as 350 wide, and 200 high, maintaining its correct aspect ratio)...

hope this helps ya...

Lol, you are way ahead of me, dj2 is my track info template, i have dabbled in html code but not that much and just resizing the width while maintaining the height via aspect ratio doesn't really do much in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply though, if i have time i might just go out and get all new cover art, time consuming as it is.

That's whatI had to do at one poiint, I think I had aboutt 1500 albums then. It's been easy to maintain though, I'm close to 5000 albums now and another couple of thousand of partial albums and singles - all with cover art..

You should be able to get about 85% of your covers from Walmart and most of the rest from the Amazon sites (don't forget amazon.uk & amazon.de)

Hey ModelMaker...

Yeah...been pretty easy this time around. I'd been a smoker for almost 23 years, and it was starting to make me feel pretty bad (not to mention getting very expensive - in Australia cigs are around $12.00 per packet now).

My wife and I both quit together, and we used Zyban initially to get us over the dreaded Agressive Lunatic phase (first couple of days).

It's is different this time around, we have both given up so many times before, and whimped out far too easily. This time, there is no going back. We are now NON smokers.

We have not given up, we have stopped smoking (I read this in a quit help book - saying you've given up makes it sound like you've lost something - not the case with the filfy things).

tcman, is the issue that you have lots of cover art of differing sizes, or just that your TIT does not display them at a fixed size?

If you have lots of different sizes, consider using a tool which has batch editing, so you can say, point it at a directory, say "find all the JPG files below this directory, resize em to 400x400, and set their JPG quallity to 80%, then save over the top of the exisiting file". That's what I do periodically... Google Picassa2 does this sort of thing nicely AND IT'S FREE!!

[completely off topic]

Lunch, Model

Nice going and keep it up. I was a heavy smoker for years, and quit a few years ago. Life's much better and more fun without it...
