Update:  The first few error reports below are from some recent MC beta builds, but not the most recent build. The errors have changed somewhat as the builds changed, although they're all related in that it's normally during ripping or heavy use that the crashes occur... For the error logs from the more recent Media Center 11.1.95 beta build, please scroll down to the later posts on this page....

I did look through the MC Crash parts of the FAQ recently, but did not find a great solution to the errors I've been seeing with MC 11.1… I may have missed something, but I thought I'd post the errors here in case this info could be of any use while 11.1 is still being perfected.

Primarily:

I've been experiencing a lot of crashes and some freezes and massive slow-downs since installing the last few MC 11.1 Beta's. I don't really know what I'm looking at with the logs, exactly, but it seems like the crashes may be related to the new MC Podcast functions. Is CinternetReader part of the Podcast updating process? Because CinternetReader seems to be running right before the crashes as well….

I'm not saying that it's actually a problem with the way the Podcast and CinternetReader functions are working in and of themselves, but perhaps Podcast/CinternetReader just happens to be the straw that breaks the camel's back, so to speak, when other resource-consuming processes are going on (in the examples below, I'm almost always ripping a CD and/or playing music while tagging files when the program fizzles out).

Now, I didn't keep a log of every single crash, but here are some of the latest:

While trying to rip a CD – while MC was contacting the CD info database (YADB) -- the program froze momentarily and then closed of it's own accord. From the look of the log, MC was also trying to update Podcast info at the same time:

Later: While playing MP3s I also had two CDs in my CD drives (which I wasn't playing, but which MC was aware of). Suddenly, MC becomes very sluggish. Eventually, it becomes unresponsive. I eject the CDs that are in the drives (one of the CD drive lights was blinking, making me think that MC might be still trying to access it). Coincidentally or not, MC now becomes slightly responsive, letting me click on things but not playing music.

I choose to close the program: It takes a few seconds, but finally it closes. But then it won't reopen. I wait a while, and it still won't reopen. I know from past experiences that I'll now have to manually terminate the processes or reboot in order to restart MC, but that doing either of these things will get MC to load again, only with some data lost. Once again, the log seems to indicate that the Podcast feeds were being checked when the error occurred:

And still later, while ripping a new set of CDs, I walked away from my PC. When I returned an hour later, MC had closed of it's own accord, without completing the ripping process. Again we see Podcast/CinternetReader stuff mentioned in the log prior to the crash (I should note that my PC was under some resource strain at the time of the crash, since I was not only ripping/encoding CDs using MC, I was also downloading some files online using FireFox):

Notes: I'm only posting the very end of each log, not the entire log. I reset the log after each crash. I am using MC 11.1.89. I know that 11.1.91 is out now but I haven’t had a chance to install it yet. So, if the errors above were caused by something that has already been fixed, please ignore this post. However, errors similar to the ones above have been occurring for me using many of the latest 11.1 Beta builds. Also, usually when I restart MC after a crash, MC recommends that I let it take various actions to help prevent the problem in the future: I always choose "okay," letting MC take all actions it recommends; crashes end up occuring again anyway. I also did a clean install with one of the earlier 11.1 Betas, but not with 11.1.89.

I hope there's some usual info above. But perhaps this is just a system-specific error, and no one else is having this problem.

Thanks Luke.  It looks like something with the internet reading isn't right.  Podcasts and several other features use this.

Could you post your system info?  If you're on XP, have you run Windows Update recently?  I only ask because this problem isn't something we've heard before.

Using Media Center 11.1.95.... things were going well for a while.... and then another crash while ripping CDs .... the same basic error occurred twice (MC froze under nearly identical conditions) .... I'm including the end of the log from the second occurence....

Both times, MC ripped almost all of the tracks from the two CDs I had in my drives, and was busy encoding those tracks -- possibly ripping the final track -- when it froze and became completely unresponsive.... Had to force the program to shut down and had to start the rip process over again.... I don't know how useful this part of the log will be, though .... doesn't look like much....

And again .... this time MC had finished ripping ALL of the tracks.... all it needed to do was finish up the encoding..... and then SPLAT.... it crashed.

NOTES: The Podcast stuff I was suspicious of before no longer seems to tie into the pre-crash part of the log at all anymore, so that may have been a false lead.... I can say that these crashes seem far more likely when I'm using other programs in addition to MC (like browsing the web or downloading) and when I'm trying to do other things with MC (like playing music) while also ripping or tagging with MC (mostly ripping/encoding seems to be the culprit). However, even when I leave my PC alone completely, and only have MC ripping and nothing else, crashes like this do occur anyway during some rips....

Also, It's interesting that MC never seems to crash when I've just begun ripping a CD -- it always waits until it's made it through a very significant portion of the ripping process before locking up and then going down in flames.

Have you looked carefully through the thread on crashes caused by other applications and hardware?  You can find a link in the FAQ here.  There are many reasons.

I did look through the crash FAQ material.... interesting stuff.... I learned a lot.

But it seems like most of the solutions I found there that would apply to my situation ended up just throwing the blame on the individual's PC  and never MC -- stuff like "MC is perfect. What you need to do is reformat your entire external drive, delete the following three programs off your PC, rework your OS, and chop off both your thumbs with an ax while learning to reverse engineer C++ code."

I kid: I exagerate; but you know what I'm talkin' about. And I'll admit that my PC, drives, and other programs may very well be the "problem" and looking outside of MC may be the solution in my case as well..... but since many previous versions of MC were far more stable for me, and it's the MC 11.1 betas that are consistently crashing, it seems like maybe there's a we bit of a possible stability problem with MC 11.1 .....  It ends up grabbing all the processing power it can, and then chokes on it and falls over.

Anyway, I was hoping that posting my crash data here would be of some use while MC 11.1 is being finalized.... if not, and it's determined that it's just my PC that's not getting along with MC 11.1, then that's fine too -- I just won't use MC to rip anymore or to tag CDs. No problem there.... not a great solution for the program as a whole, maybe, but a workable solution for me.... Or maybe I'll split up the ripping and MP3 encoding process into two different steps, and see if MC can handle that. That might do it.  But of course I prefer to have MC just not crash no matter what I'm having it do ....   

Note that I've been using MJ/MC for several years, and some builds have been extremely stable for me and others have been very crash-prone. For the last couple of years, I have not significantly changed my PC set-up in any way (using the same multiple PCs; home and office), so my inclination, fairly ort not, is to blame the MC versions and not my PCs for the problems. Notably, there have been more stable versions of MC than unstable ones, and it's usually the beta builds that are the most crash prone (which is expected). The various builds of MC 11.1, however, have seemed extra prone to freezing, crashing, slow-downs, and system resource hogging .... but other than that, I think it's a great step forward... I love the new options, new views, the podcast functionality, the improved iPod support and image support, etc.... but Crashing = Bad.

It's a common misbelief that if a PC is otherwise stable and only crashes with one program, that it is certain that the problem is with the program and not the PC.  It may be, but it may not be true.

Every program, including different versions or even builds of MC, may stress a PC or its OS in ways it has never experienced before.

Please double check the thread on crashes.  Disable all third party plug-ins.  Simplify your OS if possible.  Check your hardware (Omni's post is useful).

Just now, MC ripped two CDs for me... but while going on to the encoding process MC got confused again.... This time MC didn't crash or freeze, though, as a whole.... instead, just the encoding part of the Rip-Encode process got stuck. The Ripping Progess window has said, for the last 30 minutes, "Encoding 1 track - 24 of 25 tracks processed." What it means by "24 of 25" is hard to determine, though, because it actually appears that all 25 tracks were ripped but only 4 of them were encoded as MP3.

Now, if I try to close MC or the Rip Progress window, MC warns me that ripping is currently in progress, and asks if I really want to quit. So MC is at least still aware that it's supposedly in the middle of a rip-encode process, even though it's not getting anywhere with finishing it. So, since I'd rather not lose all the time I spent ripping these CDs, so choose not to quit -- But when I hit cancel and let MC go back to "ripping" (i.e., normalizing & encoding, since the ripping part is actually complete), nothing happens... the status bar stays at about the midway point, claiming to be encoding at 3.5x, with the progress window saying "Encoding 1 track - 24 of 25 tracks processed." But nothing changes...

This seems related to the freezes/crashes from before, since it's happening once again half-way or more through a demanding rip/encode process. However, it's interesting that this time MC is otherwise behaving normally and not eating up a ton of processing/CPU power or crashing, etc... it'll even play music. It just can't complete the encoding for the rip.... Very atypical behaviour for MC on my machine.... Usually it either works great or it crashes/freezes/sucks up processing power like a madman, and not something like this, where it stops actually ripping-encoding but otherwise behaves like a dream....
