My first thought was

~limit=3,-1,[album artist (auto)]

which only gives a random 3 albums

You can use limit to give an arbitrary number of albums/ artist

But i can't think of a way to apply it so you only get a certain number of albums/ artist for the whole library.

[Media Type]=[Audio] sort=[Artist],[Album],[Track #] ~nodup=[Artist] ~a
~nodupe=[artist] ~a can sometimes return undesired results regarding compilation cd's

Can the ~limit modifier be used to limit the number of ALBUMS per artist, and if so how please?

we may need more info, but for now, I've got:

-g=podcast [media type]=audio ~limit=1,-1,[artist artist (auto)] ~limit=2,-1,[album]

which returns 2 random albums from a single random artist.

i tried that on the whole library and it only returned one album, because i think the first limit only returns one album

the 1st limit returns all the albums from a single, random artist. try removing the second limit to see.

was the one album you got from an artist you definately have more than one album from?

I can click away on the refresh button  here and get consistent results, unless, the random artist chosen by the first limit only has one album in the library.
I swear I mentioned that in my post, but it's not there, so I must just be going crazy!!!

I'm actually after multiple artists as well. In a nutshell for my iPod sync I want 2 or 3 albums of all the artists that are in my favourite artists smartlist. This then leaves enough room to do 1 albums from all the other artists in my library, and it's still an interesting playlist that changes everytime I sync.

multiple artist albums don't really fall into the scope of "albums per artist"

I've managed to get a setup that discards all artists that only have a single album in the library, and then when the smartlist is loaded, two albums from a single random artist are always listed. interesting.

I haven't been able to figure out a solution to your question so far and need to go out now. I've not given up on it yet, but it doesn't look promising.
