Hanging PC
« on: January 11, 2006, 03:23:05 pm »

I've had the Media Centre vers10 for about a year now and he has always worked fine. Recently however when I go to rip a CD, the centre looks for and loads the track information, the progress bar then appears, but then the centre just hangs. I can't quit out of it (ctrl-alt-del doesn't help) so I end up switching off the power.

Can anyone help at all?

Can you kill MJ with the task manager?

This sounds like a hardware problem, like maybe your CD drive has partially failed...

Hi John
Thanks for taking the time to write. No I can't use the task master - everything totally freezes. The thing that worries me is that I had mistakingly 'ripped' a CD with the (now recalled) Sony Rootkit Software on it. I had activated it by accident, but my Spyware software identified it and removed it from my system. I am concerned that this might have had been the cause.

I tried 'ripping' a few CD's again and the first one worked fine and then the next one 'jameed' the system again. The other thing I noticed was that when the CD was ripping, the mouse movement became very erratic.

The rootkit could be the culprit. I remember it was EXTREMELY difficult to remove, and Sony didn't get that part of it right the first time. You might do some research to find out how to remove it and make sure your Spyware software did the right job.

Did this problem start happening at the same time?

If not, then we're back to hardware. Usually a completely hung system means hardware failure.

Thanks John.
It did start at the same time. I'll investigate further.

I am using MC11 and i am also experiencing a periodic lockup.....freezes everything you have to reboot to get it working again. usually happens when i am ripping cds with my dvd player. the dvd player is only a couple of months old and works fine as long as MC11 is not used.

I got my problem resolved by restoring my PC to a time before I had accidentally loaded the Sony rootkit. It now works fine so it looks like the rootkit had caused the problems.

Have you checked?  It was installed automatically when people ripped some Sony disks.

Try a google search.
