Rename Files from Properties in MC11.1
« on: January 24, 2006, 08:21:55 am »

Library Tools>Rename files from properties.. it actually doesn't move files and folders according to the base directory although the location column in the list view shows the updated location

I just tested this and can't reproduce it.  Do you have "Directories" checked?

Any details?

Acually i just had to remove some files from My old time radio FTP (Due to a cease and desist e-mail i got from a copyright holder)  and I used this option to remove them, and it moved them just fine.

Well, this are the steps of what happened here:

1- Renamed an album tracks in a folder in "D:\" drive from properties and checked directories and changed base directory to "E:\Mp3" and clicked ok.
2- MC processed the action I took then told me to delete the empty folder which i moved the tracks from it and i clicked ok.
3- The location column in the list view of the album updated to the new location.
4- I deleted the folder which had the album i just moved.
5- closed MC.. and opened it after a while and i saw the tracks of the album in the playing now as broken (with the X indicator)
6- I went to the "E:\Mp3" folder to check the album and i didnt find it there !!!

maybe you should not use "MP3" as a folder name?

I just checked files where MC said they should be after the move and they are where they should be.

My structure is F:\mp3\artist\album\track.mp3

Rename from properties works fine for me in build 103.

I also Tried It To E:\Mp3\ And It Worked Fine

The Only Problem I Ever Had With MC Is When The Drive had Norton Protection Recycle Bin Active, And There Was No Room (Sort of) Left On The Drive.

When The Files Were Deleted Or Norton Recycle Bin Was Deactivated MC Worked Fine.

Once All The Files Were Deleted I Had Like 10 Gigs Free, That The OS Could Not Use.

Maybe the latest hope/request, is that people working on MC try to track down this function related codes, they may figure out something wrong!

You probably should turn on logging and then reproduce the error.
Host the log file on a website and post a URL here for JRiver staff to review.

Any Read Only directories?

Maybe the deletion you did removed the files (by mistake)?

Or you could put it down to the Phantom File Eater. (A close relation of the sock eating monster that lives in the washing machine).

The only related problem I've ever had is this:

I have MC set to rename and move files to an external drive.... Sometimes I've found that if I've used MC to perform this function but I've forgotten to turn my external drive on, the files that I'm trying to move will vanish (i.e., MC does not give a warning saying "the destination drive/folder does not exist or is not accessible; it just rips/renames/moves the file as it's supposed to, except that since the destination drive isn't on, there's nowhere for the file to go, so, seemingly, it's disappears instead, with MC noting that the operation failed... making the file seemingly vanish). At least, they have in the past -- I haven't tested this on any recent MC builds though, because, well, I just try to remember to keep my external drive on when I'm renaming tracks, and that solves the problem.

I wonder if "missing" tracks like this end up going into some temp folder when a rename-and-move operation doesn't work as expected?

A Temp File Is Created, But not in a temp folder (That I Know Of).

If i remember correctly it is created in the destination folder. and i would think when the operation is completed then it is renamed to the file name as per in the rules.
