OT: What genre would you put Sinatra and Dean Martin?
« on: February 07, 2006, 01:39:29 pm »

I'm constantly updating my tags (as every MC user, I suppose) and once in a while I find music that I can't categorize.

Two examples are Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. I don't have many tracks of these artists, but nevertheless I want them properly tagged.

Do you have any suggestions? I don't feel they belong in Pop or Rock :)

Thanks!

I have them filled under "Vocal - Vocal Jazz & Standards". I have another Vocal genre, which I name "Vocal - Adult Vocal" where I fill people like Barbra Streisand, Perry Como, Andy Williams, etc.

Hope it helps.

I would classify that as
- Big Bands / Standards

If you want to break it down further:
- Big Bands
- Vocals / Crooners would be seperate.

Easy Listening or Vocal; They're not really Jazz, 'specially not Martin. I associate Big Band with other music like Count Basie or Duke Ellington.

Easy Listening along with Tony Bennett & Ray Charles.
I don't know much Ray Charles (any, actually, apart from 'Mess Around'), but I always thought he was a Blues musician...

I too use Easy Listening for them.

Ray Charles is under Jazz here but he could just as easily be under Blues, Soul, or a wide variety of other Genres.  It's funny, the ones that are hard to classify all in the same place are usually the ones I like the best.

This only shows the average age of users. I am working on restoration of an 8ft stack of LP's that are so scratched up you can't see the tracks. And most of them are Sinatra vintage or older. Just class them as Grandpa's best

Thanks all for your input! It has been both educational and entertaining ("Crusty Olde Fartes" for example) to read this :)

After reading your views, I narrowed it down to three possible Genres; "Gangsta Grandpa's", "Easy Listening" and "Vocal".

I think Easy Listening is the most proper for me, but on the other hand, I have a Mood category called "Lounge", which in my world is almost the same (including Elevator Music). So I might end up using Vocal instead...

Thanks again!

Sorry to disagree with the above posts.
IMHO there is only one way to distinguish Frank, Sammy & Dino from Bennett & other crooners...  RATPACK!

(I don't have any Joey Bishop or Peter Lawford tunes in my collection)
 ;)

I also use "eclectic" to distinguish certain artists that fall between broader categories:i.e." Frank Zappa (eclectic rock). My favorite genre is "americana" (Dylan, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams, Neil Young, Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, etc.)- those that have withstood the test of time for me. I know Neil & Joni are Canadian. I have Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits listed here, as well... and he's a Brit!
