Library on NAS
« on: April 09, 2006, 11:45:05 am »

Hi,

I tried to place the librariy on my NAS disk, but it did not work. MediaCenter crashed each time I tried to load the library.

Can anyone help me there?

TIA

I've used MC for Years across a network, but just moved my library to a NAS.

MC11.1 will playback OK, but crashes if MC is not exited before a suspend of the PC.  This behavior is very repeatable on several systems using both wired (100Mb) & wireless LANs.

Returning to a library stored locally on the PC or used across a network via MediaServer MC11.1 does not crash after resuming from suspend or hibernate.

I have no other network problems after resuming, only MC11.1 reading from a NAS device.

NAS:  Buffalo Linkstation HD-HG300LAN

MC should support media library storage on a NAS, shouldn't it?

Try disabling write cache on the drive - then you should be OK.

Moving the Media files to a NAS should be problem-free.  However, don't move your actual Library database files to the NAS directly as this causes a lot of problems.

If you want to share your library among multiple machines, and you don't want to use the MC Server due to it's limitations, check this thread for my solution...

Thank you for your help, glynor .  I did have my library stored on the NAS (so it could be shared across the network).  I've made a local copy and now file access from the NAS works fine, and there are no crashes after resuming.

What NAS disk do you use? Have you tired it over Wifi?  How fast is it?

Thanks

We've seen drive problems that were cured by updating the driver.  Here's one from the "Weird and Wonderful" thread here:

Import Audio Fails
Updating the firmware for a Maxtor external drive solved it:

Question for J.R. Are there any plans to fix it so the library can also be stored along with the media on an NAS drive?

I'm about to invest in a Buffallo Tech 1TB NAS drive specifically so I can move my media and library to a shared device.

Thanks!

I am still hoping to get some feedback from J.R. on this before I invest in a NAS drive.

Thanks.
