1,200 CD's later, I am now through the ripping stage and starting on the library clean up process.  I am vexed by the issue of standardising Album, Artist or Track names.
There are different nomenclatures used in YADB and there are also different type of printing on the CD covers for those not found.  For example, an artist such as:-

Nathaniel Cole
Nat Cole
Nat King Cole
Nat "King" Cole

I will, probably somewhat arbitrarily, chose the one I prefer and change all the others to match.  Whether this is wrong or right, I at least have more uniform and logical entry in the library.

At the end of this exercise, I would naturally select all the tracks and upload to YADB.  Then a thought occurred to me.  My preferences for this, or indeed any other type of editing, may not match those of other users.

So, some questions.  Does YADB standardise across albums, artists or track names?  If they don't, should they?  If they don't, then if I upload a few thousand entries, am I making unnecessary work for the clean up team?

Yeah, it'd be great if users got together and set up a standard for things like this. Personally (for artist names) I use the ones on mp3.com to at least achieve some level of consistency.

Problems also occur for artists with a "the" in front of them (ie The Beach Boys vs. Beach Boys).

Even better would be a database of custom fields that MC users have agreed upon. For example, I use many many custom fields for classical music that just get lost when I upload to YADB... some way to retain or at least view this information would be invaluable.

..do u realise how contentious such a system might be tho ? ..minutiae like whether to use lower case, upper case, mixed case etc..

Even if you get past that, what happens when you want to make changes in the future. Who updates the master database to reflect these changes ?

What do you do about submissions that don't comply with said standard ?

Interesting. How does one go about getting on to the YADB cleanup crew?

No offense to the clean-up crew (I realize they can't get to everything) but it's kind of funny to see listed, on the same page, the clean-up stats right below entries like:

Even more so pertinent question, given that there is no effective YADB "clean-up"team; should I make my updates and then submit to YADB, or by doing so, am I causing unneccesary work.

Would it be possible to just put a "Report Error" button or link on the YADB window? When I was re-ripping my CD collection I came across a bunch of mistakes that I would have gladly reported if I had known there was somebody to report them to.

Then at least the volunteers could get a report of what to look at to make their jobs easier.

I've been thinking of a few things today. It would be nice if instead of reporting it, you could just fix it and it would apply for everyone...

That would be great - I believe in Wikis and lowering the bar to correction makes updates happen...
Too many YADB entries have no genre, no year, and escaped (\) punctuation, etc.

Since I use a PhatNoise I'd like to see a non-Unicode version to pick from.

And I like to use what's on the CD for Artist, etc
