Media Center 11.1.183
« on: May 05, 2006, 02:29:32 pm »

This is the latest version of MC 11.1.  Your MC11.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.  MC11.1 is a free upgrade from MC11.0.

If you're new to MC11, please use the build from our download page here:
http://www.jrmediacenter.com/download.html

This latest build (usually safe) of MC11.1 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter111183.exe

11.1.183 (5/5/2006)

1. Fixed: With certain font anti-aliasing schemes enabled, font auto-sizing would not work as expected.

11.1.182 (5/5/2006)

1. Changed: Updated the French translation. (thanks Jean-Marc)
2. Changed: Revised the shrink mode used by the panes during auto-sizing when there isn't enough space.
3. Changed: While in windowed mode, the close and restore buttons aren't shown on the top bar. (since the window itself has them)
4. Changed: Disc numbers of 0 and 1 don't sort as equals in the panes. (but they still do in lists)
5. Fixed: The right-most column wouldn't update the horizontal scrollbar after a resize in a file list.
6. Changed: More tuning to automatic font size selection system.
7. Changed: Updated Portuguese translation. (thanks ChicoSelfs)
8. Changed: Updated all translation files to contain latest source code phrases. (now at version 2.3)
9. Changed: Added "Conductor" as a default library field. (Media Center has always saved / loaded this from MP3 tags once created, but now it'll be automatically created)
10. NEW: After manually creating the fields "Instruments", "Featured Performers", "Classical Genre", "Track Artist", doing an "Update Library (from tags)" will load proprietary MusicMatch data for these fields. (read and write support)

11.1.181 (5/3/2006)

1. Changed: Creation of start menu shortcuts would not work as expected during a non-express upgrade install.
2. Fixed: The jaggy 16x16 Media Center icon could still show in some places.

New Features in MC 11.1
Podcasting support, with OneClick Podcast subscription
Audible fully supported
Much improved handheld support for iPod, PlayforSure devices, and many others
User-configurable locations for media types on handhelds
iPod Shuffle and Nano support
Photos and album art on iPods that support it
Automatic backup of library
Directshow support for AAC files
Much faster handling of thumbnail images (requires one-time rebuild of thumbnails)
New thumbnail slider bar for resizing

This version doesn't seem to autodetect Create Nomad Jukebox 3 connected via firewire...

Oops...forget that...after exiting MC and then restarting it with the device connected, it found it straight away.

'smooth the edges of screen fonts' for one. (system properties > advanced > performance > visual effects)

Yes, now the font has the right size.
But the grey osd overlay in the visualization window is still small.

Coverart missing from last track.

Two CD drives, ripping from one drive:
Get coverart from internet = On
Max concurrent ripping      = 2
Max concurrent encoding   = 2
Max comb concurr process = 2
Encode on the fly when rip = Off (unchecked)

Coverart is downloaded and associated with all the tracks, except the last track. Coverart download appears to be occurring after ripping of the last track but before the encoding of the last track is finished. Thus the last track has no image file associated with it.

Problem doesn't occur when "Encode on the fly" is On.

What version are you using?  I had this exact same problem a while back, but I was assuming that it was fixed in the newer builds.

Small usability issue, maybe but when you press and hold down a mouse button,
as you move the mouse over other controls their hover states still
work.  Take a look at other Windows progs (Office will do) and this is
not the norm.

Also in the action window style panes, events occur on Mouse Down instead of Mouse up.

In the Artists/Album view scheme, with the upper half in Artists view (similar to pane, i.e. no album art thumbnails, just the columns), the scheme agglomerates the albums from the artists into one row, so that if there are multiple albums per artists it says "<varies>" for the album name, etc.

All of that is well and good, but the Date column appears to show an average of the dates for each album/track.  Instead of showing "<varies>", it calculates the average.

Example.  4 ABBA tracks, dated 1976, 1992, 1998, 2001.  The result is 10/2/1991, which I calculate as the average of the four years (1991.75).  I was expecting to see "<varies>".

My Theater View fonts are still different from what they used to be pre .181 build.

The font is smaller and squarer than before and not as nice to look at.

Theater View issues:

Playing songs via Theater view is suddenely VERY sluggish.  When I navigate to an album and play a song, there is a delay of about 10 seconds before it starts playing (it just seems to "hang" during this time.)  I can't say with which version this started, but it started when I upgraded to 183 (I was in the 170's before this version.)  If I navigate to another song on the same album, it seems to load faster, but if I play a song from a different album I get the long delay again while the current song continues to play for the 10 seconds.  This does not happen with the normal view (songs load VERY quickly with the normal view), and it was definitely not an issue with earlier builds.  This is a "deal breaking" bug with Theater View for me since it adds WAY to much time to the process of browsing for songs.

I can also verify Richard's comment about the font in Theater View -- it has changed to a smaller, "thicker" font that is not as nice to look at or work with.  I preferred the previous font for Theater View.

Media Server issue:

When I start MC on the client, the library takes much longer to load than it did with previous versions -- i.e. the progress bar moves MUCH more slowly now.

Thanks,

Larry

1. Seeing MC lose focus (Firefox maximizes & MC disappears) when I select a Tile and choose Media Labeler. Also when I select tracks and do the same w/ Media Lablere; the old behavior would just allow the labeler app to pop up over MC.

2. Added two tiles to Burn Queue & hard crashed MC; only once but thought I'd mention it.

3. Confused about Panes mode: multiple selection of Albums does not display anything in the file list. Trying to put together a comp. and this is not the way MC used to behave (or should?) ...as I highlight the album names (more than one) file names dissappear instead of listing my selected albums' files. EDIT - the error (all files dissappear) when I select a 45 rpm title that is one single track but it obviously has the same artist name as the other titles; the album is BAMBOO 7". Very strange behavior.

4. Files added to Playing Now w/ shuffle engaged retain shuffle ordering and revert to it after shuffle is toggled off. Shouldn't we be able to add tracks to PN, untoggle shuffle, so we can move around track ordering instead of making a playlist (or then save to playlist) every single time. This "destructive" shuffle behavior is counterintuitive to me and I don't know if the behavior I just reported is by design or not. EDIT-Something is wrong with Shuffle mode. I have had it off for hours and imported some files to edit. List header clicks are not saved in Playing Now and for some reason my PN files are getting shuffled upon Playback regardless of the shuffle state.

thanks,
Dr. C

Since I've now properly set up Girder to run my remote and I can use it to control MC, I've noticed that pressing TAB (and Shift-TAB) cycle the focus to parts of MC's interface that are currently hidden (at least I'm guessing that's what's happening).  Then, MC seems to let you "select" items via the "keyboard" that you can't see on the screen.  This has been happening for many, many builds of MC (I've been too busy moving to complain until now).

For example:

1. Open a View Scheme (such as Genre/Artist/Album) in MC and shift to Panes Mode (don't show the Tiles) with a details view of the files.
2. Click the "up arrows" to hide the Panes (so you only see the details list, not the panes part of the window).
3. Type TAB.
4. Hit the down arrow.

The expected behavior from hitting tab would be to move the caret to the "Details List" of files.  Then when you hit the down arrow it should select the next file down (and so on and so forth).

This is NOT what happens.  MC appears to move the caret to the Panes, even if you can't see them on the screen.  Very confusing.  In fact, in order to get the caret to the details list, you need to hit TAB over and over again until you've "tabbed through" all of the Panes (which you can't see so who knows how many there are).  This matters to me a lot because... When I'm using MC on my HTPC, screen space is very limited (1024x768 resolution with large fonts) and I keep the Panes "minimized" all the time (except when I explicitly need them).

Theatre View:

Thicker font: I like the thicker font much better - I can now read the screen from my chair easily (about 10ft away).
Hanging: I get a delay before playback starts, but only about 1 second. However there used to be no delay.

And my custom view schemes STILL don't appear - and haven't done for ages!!

This issue with files being considered "missing" when they are moved while an iPod is connected seems to be fixed now.  The "Re-check sync" function now works -- i.e. after a file is moved, it is considered "In Queue" after the "Re-check sync" button is pressed.

Thanks for fixing this (which I believe was actually fixed in 180.)

I did notice the fonts look different in TV but they appear smaller to me therefore a little harder to read. I have my TV fonts set to large.

I just noticed a minor bug with multiple monitors. I'm using 3 monitors that are arranged with the following layout:

      +---+
      | 2 |
°-----+-----+
|  1  |  3  |
+-----+-----+

Where ° is the origin (0,0). Monitors 1 and 3 are 1600x1200, monitor 2 is 1024x768. If MC is maximized on monitor 3 and I click on an entry in the menu bar, the menu will open upwards, i.e. on the bottom of monitor 2.

When changing libraries MC is creating a new folder in the thumbnail directory for my second library, and draws the thumbnails from scratch. When I leave said library it seems that MC is deleting that new directory, and I am left with just one folder again.

Note: the second library isnt or never has been a clone. i made it from scratch.

Does the video display on the primary screen correctly?
If that's the case, it has to do with the overlay of your video card and isn't an MC issue.

For another test, play an .avi movie file with Windows Media Player on your primary screen.  Then drag it to the secondary screen while it's playing.
Does it display on both?
If one just shows black, then your video card is not capable of drawing the overlay on that particular monitor.
You'll need to configure MC to do full screen playback on the primary.

Yes, I have that option ticked. Thanks for replying - as you have them working I've had a look again and established the following:

1. Custom child view schemes do appear, but not on the home menu (they appear with the thumbnails after clicking their parent from the home menu)
2. Custom root view schemes do not appear (I'd expect them to appear on the home menu if anywhere)

Maybe this is by design? Can someone please confirm whether it's possible to get custom view schemes to show on the home menu? I know it used to be possible, but that was quite a while ago.

Thanks,
Ed.

The root view schemes shown by Theater View are not configurable.  This is by design.

What thumbnail cleanup mode do you have chosen in Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails?

Also, if you start and stop MC without switching libraries, does it still get rid of thumbnails?

while in library browser, always show files is unticked but I have files showing.

If I move away, and then use the 'back' command, it goes back to where I was, the way it was, with files showing.

If I use right-click > locate > advanced > [field] MC jumps to the root. (this is good)
If I now use the back command, MC does indeed take me back, but the files have now gone into hiding.

Theatre View:Hanging: I get a delay before playback starts, but only about 1 second. However there used to be no delay.
Ed.

I tried 183 on another system, and the delay is MUCH shorter.  The system with the longer delay is a dual 1Gig Pentium3, while the shorter delay is on a Pentium4 2.5Gig.  Obviously the P3 is a much slower system, but this delay (a full 10 seconds) did not occur before installing one of the later versions, and it does NOT happen when using normal view -- it only happens in Theater View, and it only happens when the new song is from a different album than the current one.

I'm still trying to figure out if there are any other patterns to this issue.

UPDATE:  If I choose another song from the same album in the "Playing Now" screen (of Theater View) I don't get any delay.  If, however, I re-navigate to this album and select another song from it to play, the delay happens again.  In other words, it's only when I play another song from the "Playing Now" screen that I DON'T get the delay.  As long as I navigate to a song via the Theater View pages, I always get the LONG delay.

Could you add to the contextual menu of each playlist the link (~ an option) "Edit this Playlist"? PLEASE
That will increase much the software ergonomics.   ;)

You fixed the bug a few builds back where playlists/smartlists were not being sent to playing now in the correct order via the right click menus which was great.  However there is still a bug when a playlist/smartlist is called from within a plugin using the sdk.  The order it is sent to the plugn is the same as it was being sent to playing now.  Can this be fixed for SDK calls also?

Cheers

Adam

(For a demo try one of the new Lyrics plugins either @l@ns or Doofs and choose a source other than Playing Now for files)

Another small bug.  When an image is added to files via drag and drop it ignores the images settings in Options.  By this I mean I have images set to appear side by side with files as a folder.jpg.  After drag and drop images are stored in MCs Cover Art folder as Artist Name - Album.jpg

1. I set 172 files to be updated from YADB this morning on my way out, and when I returned 10 hours later MC was still stuck on analysing 1 of 172. The files were a mixture of flac, ape, & mp3.

2. Also noticing, and this could very well be system specific, that after burning and ejecting a cd, MC takes a more than desirable amount of time and seems to bog down my system when tabulating the burn stats and burn finished msg (burn again, print, quit). Not a very smooth transition and feels buggy to me.

Yes  :) the video display on the primary screen correctly with MC.
All my videos are in AVI format (very rare exceptions in MKV).

Windows Media Player display it on both ::)
My video/graphic card is an ATI RADEON X850 XT (with lastest driver)

Bug:
Intention: Create a subfolder to Season 1 of Lost and move the files there
1. Locate file on disk internal (picked one episode)
2. Created a subfolder to the current one ("Lost")
2. I took a bunch of .avi (containg tv serie episodes) in the folder and right-dragged them onto the new folder, selected Move
3. MC launched a Copy dialog, but it looked a bit strange, the bar jumped forward and backwards.

Result: MC created folder after folder, like this:

Finally, I found the files in last folder, but not only those I selected to move, but all!
In addition to this, MC finally renamed the files to LODD0D~1.AVI and alike.

...in Theater View fonts appear smaller to me therefore a little harder to read. I have my TV fonts set to large.

Edit OSD messages are also much smaller now since this build.  Can we get Theater View fonts and OSD fonts back to how they were please?

What thumbnail cleanup mode do you have chosen in Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails?

Also, if you start and stop MC without switching libraries, does it still get rid of thumbnails?

Thanks.

Hi Matt,
Sorry for the slow response. I've just done some testing, and for the sake of clarity, I'll refer to my default library as library A, and my secondary library as library B. Same goes for thumbnails folders.

So, If library A was the last library loaded before shutdown, then whether MC is open or closed, there is only ever one thumbnails folder; that for library A.
When I switch to library B, a new folder (thumbnails folder B) gets generated. I watched it happen in explorer. If i swicth back to library A, thumbnails folder B disapears again instantly. If i stay in library b and then close MC, thumbnails folder B remains, and thumbnails are instant when i start MC again.

So it appears that, thumbnails folder B is only generated when it is needed, like by switching to library B.

Incidentally, I have "erase orphans on exit" set in options.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Bri

These are technically 11.1.182 bugs (I'm in the middle of a big conversion/hotsync right now and can't try them on 183 before I go to work)

1: I turned on "Convert if necessary" to convert the flacs to ogg.  I tried to resynch, and it still said "unsupported file type".  I exited and restarted MC, and it worked fine.  This is pretty minor, but it seems like a restart should not be required.

2: I'm hotsyncing and converting my flacs to oggs on the fly, and looking at the status.  The conversions (I'm doing 2 at a time) are getting way ahead of the transfers to my rockbox, which means that by the time the conversions are done, I'll still have to wait a while for the dozens of songs to transfer.

I think that if you could reduce the priority of the conversion task relative to the transfer task, the overall operation would run faster.  It may run a LOT faster by virtue of reducing disk thrashing.  (If the transfer task had priority, the transfer operation for the converted file would likely be from Window's ram-based disk cache to the portable device, instead of from the local hard drive to the portable device.  That would mean only 2 streams on the hard drive (flac read and ogg write) instead of 3 (flac read, ogg write, and ogg read to send to device).

I guess this is more of an optimization suggestion than a bug.

Actually, since I'm doing 2 conversions at once (I think that's the media center default - I don't remember changing that), I'm really talking about going from 5 disk streams to 4 - still a lot of thrashing.   Going to 1 conversion at a time might minimize thrashing and optimize overall hotsync+conversion time.  I'll give that a try tonight.

noticed this in build 183:

Thumbnail info not complete on a smartlist.

The smartlist was made by first doing a search for all files between 2000 and 2009 and then copying and pasting the search string to a smartlist. The smartlist was then put on my navigation favorites pull down which i have at the top of the screen. The results are shown via album thumbnails with text info underneath.

I also made smartlists for decades 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's in addition to the 00's as stated above all in the same matter. The thumbnail info text is there for all albums expect maybe the last 30 or so in the 00's decade view.

It seems like media center is using up to much of it's memory and the info on the last 30 or so albums gets drop. It's only in my one smartlist view, everywhere else the thumbnail text info is there.

I have seen this in previous builds before and it has been fixed.

After making tag changes the library doesnt seem to be refreshing properly, even after pressing refresh. While browsing in tile view, photo's that should have disapeared from the list after tagging them to another property remained until I return to root level of tiles view again.

Ok, I have never posted anything on one of these forums, so I apologize if I seem like I don't know what I'm doing.
My computer crashed a week ago, and I just got it back up and running.  I purchased Media Center in November of 2005, never used a restore before, or a reinstall key.
To reinstall the Media Center on my computer, I went to my original email from JRiver and clicked on the link to restore.  I enter my registration code, and then I receive a critical error message saying, "A JRiver Meda Core component failed to load the product file into: C:/Windows/System32/Data/Default Resources/Options.xml   Please reinstall the latest version of JRiver Core program under the current user account to correct this problem.
I don't know how to do this, and somehow, when I tried, I ended up using another one of my 10 restores...I need help.
Also, I just purchased a laptop (something that will be newer and much more reliable than this PC), and I'd like to install JRiver on this..How can I do this?  How do I contact someone about the mistaken second reinstall key issued today, within minutes of attempting the first restore?  How do I restore this PC with the above mentioned error message?
I would very much appreciate any and all help.  --Heidi

Just download Media Center from this page:
www.jrmediacenter.com

and then try restoring again.  Details are here:
http://www.jrmediacenter.com/buy_faq11.html

I'll move this to a new thread where you can ask more questions if you need to.

If you use up your restores, just post on Interact and we'll take care of it.

I think that is a problem with the Ipod, the latest firmware seemed to fix it for me.
