Inaccurate space available on 1 GB Apple Nano when transferring

Here's what I did:

1. Did a reinitialize on a mostly full 1 GB Nano
2. Use manual sync to transfer 44 files (~300 mb)
3. Action window reports: 44 files -- 250 mb over

But when I closed MC, then reopened, and selected the same 44 files, the remaining space was accurate.
